Preparation for selling used On UHH

I have a number of items (primarily Nikon) that I would like to sell on UHH.
Any tips—or pitfalls to avoid would be appreciated. I am assuming that I will need to research and appropriately assess condition and value, provide pictures of listed items, have suitable packaging available, and payment options. Primarily, I am wondering about the timeline involved, specific payment recommendations, and packaging, insurance, “lessons learned”, etc.

Thank you.

Paypal all the way!
One way to assess value is to go to Ebay and query your item. Check out the "sold" prices and subtract 10% for UHHers since you won't be paying a commission & believe me the folks here will know the Ebay prices, used prices, refurb prices and if they don't a helpful member will post that your item can be found at such and such place for less :) I have sold several things on UHH and on Ebay as well. I actually prefer Ebay- it's totally impersonal. I don't mess with Craigslist at all. If your equipment has scratches, dings, mars etc (other than expected for its age) expect to subtract $ for that.

Shipping can be expensive especially if you add insurance (I always do). Because of that I charge for shipping although sometimes I will pay half. You can go to USPS and put in a weight and an address and get an estimate for shipping. It's easy to ship via USPS and do it all from home. I usually ship 2-3 day priority. You can ship ground but it takes a bit longer- for larger, heavy items it might be the way to go. Ship your item in a box that is big enough to securely wrap the item in bubble wrap so that it doesn't move around. I usually give my package to my mailman and if I miss him then I tote it down to the post office. There will be a tracking number on the postal label/ invoice.

Take good pictures to post, identify any defects to avoid a disappointed buyer and possible return. It sounds like a lot but after a couple of times it is no big deal.

PS- the best shipping boxes are the ones you get your own order in - save them.

You don't happen to have for sale a Nikon 20 mm f 2.8 D lens do you :)

Great advice. Paypal is the only way to go, and pictures seal the deal.

One other thing- you could always do a "teaser" and do a "coming soon" list of what you have for sale on UHH and say you will add images and more information soon. That way you could find out if there is interest.

You have already had good replies, and I also agree about paypal, it provides many protections for both buyer and seller. Make your descriptions complete, accurate, and honest. I would also suggest shutter count information for digital camera bodies. Easy to find for Nikon. If you want to insure things include that in your price. If you can also get shipping estimates ahead of time and include those in the price so you can state free shipping that may also help. You may also even have to think about sales tax in some situations, although that's not usually an issue unless you are 'a dealer'.

I’ll do that soon. Right now I’m dealing with an elderly parent so I’m not quite ready....

Thanks to all for the helpful comments. I want to get all set up so I’m ready to go.

Timeline? Package well, insurance is optional usually at buyers request and expense. PM buyer when the item shipped and provide a tracking number. If you accept checks do NOT ship until check has cleared. This could take as much as two weeks. Money orders are old school and risky as they are subject to forgery. Paypal costs a little but has protection for the buyer and seller. Good luck and good shooting to you!

I posted my mint D810 with 29311 clicks ... on UHH ...I got a Luke warm reception .. so back to eBay ...sold it immediately for $1,705 ...paid like $50 commission and $47 shipping and insurance ... not bad .. I still hold the eBay record for a used 1 yr old D800E $2,768 ...what ever you do .., avoid Craig’s list .. low ballers and scammers ..Look at the UHH “Buy and Sell” to see the range of prices and equip that is selling .. this will give you some bench marks as will eBay ..
I like the Idea of the teaser advance notice ..., Remember .., eBay for first time and occasional sellers holds your payment from the seller for up to 21 days .. and the buyer has a ton of time to send it back .. , on the UHH .. you will have access to your money a lot sooner ...

Good luck ....
