i finally decided on a refurbished d5300 body but now i'm paranoid about shutter count. is there no way of finding out shutter count before purchasing?? also are most prime lenses manual focus? this 60 somethings eyesight is failing fast.

Primes are no more nor no less manual focus than zooms. Most are auto. But the 5300, I believe, typical of the 5XXX line will only autofocus with lenses that have the motor in the lens. I do not believe they have a focus motor in the camera ( my old 5000 was like that) so be careful with your lens choice prime OR zoom. To be safe your lens choice should have a focus motor in it. Can be prime or zoom.

Your first question, regarding shutter count, there is no answer, although you can ask the seller. However, the Mean Time between for a D5300 is probably about 150,000 clicks. I suspect that whatever D5300 you purchase will be well short of 150,000.

Depending on the specific lens, a prime lens (i.e. fixed focal length lens) is not necessarily manual focus. Look for a Nicor lens that is labeled as AF-S and I believe it should work well, but check the manual.

Someone posted this link a few days ago to check shutter count, just by uploading the latest picture to the linked page. Worked great on my D5500, and the D5300 is listed as working also.

I actually have a D5300 for sale on Amazon, under "lopeza". Shutter count on it is 5,078. It's like new since I take really good care of my stuff. I never got to use it very much before I decided to go with a Nikon D500. There's nothing wrong with the camera, I just had a GAS attack. If you're interested, let me know.

I bought my D5300 refurbished from Cameta Camera almost 2 years ago, and I still love it. Mine had less than 1,000 clicks on the shutter, which is really nothing for these cameras. I shot more than that in the first two weeks. I'm pretty sure that they won't open the box and tell you how many clicks, but if it's less than 5K or so, I wouldn't worry about it. If it's more than you're comfortable with, you could always send it back. I think that it's a great camera for anyone on a tight budget, and if you buy from Cameta, you get a full year warranty. As was already said, make sure that you get AF-S or AF-P lenses for it for auto focus. They have it in stock now, here's a link.
