I'll put up one more for comparison. Nikkor 300mm AI lens, tripod, 1/125 second, spot metering, mirror up, f8, Nikon D300.

Very nice, your's gets my vote for the sharpest! Goes to show that a prime is always better than a long zoom! You must have had to have cropped that image quite a bit too.

Thank you all for your recommendations. I am using a Nikon D750. I will try again this evening and see what happens. Again thanks.

Use trial and error for exposure. A bright moon is close to a subject in cloudly-bright daylight. Your high ISO is problematic. I've also found that here near the Oregon Coast you're gonna get influence from high humidity in the night sky. Plus there's a lot of pollen and fine dust filtering down from above as the air gets colder. I had a headlight on one night and it looked like a fine snow drifting down when I looked up.

Try using f11 @125 and ISO 100 with manual setting and a tripod with a cable release. Recently put a framed moon shot photo in a doctors office using these settings. Settings are not in stone but work in the area. At f8 the shutter speed goes up to 500. Good luck!
