Well, that is good news. I must have gotten the bug free version of NIK SW since I can't ever recall experiencing a problem. But then again, I paid full price for it, long before it was free.

It is very unlikely that the June release of the Nik collection will be free. My guess, in part as a DXO Photolab user, is that you will be able to buy individual parts of the collection separately, or the collection as a whole. Based on DXO pricing for their other add-on packages like the DXO Film Pack, I would expect each part of the collection to sell separately from between $75 to $99, and the entire collection to be priced at around $499. I would also expect them to build in some integration between the Nik collection and their premiere raw post processing editor, DXO Photolab, which will hopefully also allow Nik collection adjustments to be made directly to raw files rather than just tiffs or jpegs.

This of course is just a guess based upon my prior experience using DXO Labs software, but it is unreasonable to expect that they will continue giving this software away for no cost. As a result, I would encourage anyone who's interested in the Nik software to download it now while it's still available for free.

The Nik collection is a specialized group of tools for color and black-and-white photography. You can not replicate what it does in GIMP.

Indeed! Color Efex alone has 52 filters with all kinds of sliders and controls. I've more than gotten my $250 worth - purchased the full suite before it was free, but after it reduced from original $500...and will do it again if/when there are major changes

Color Efex
Silver Efex for b&w
an HDR module
and several others: https://nikcollection.dxo.com/

Was the previous version of NIK software really plagued with bugs? Or is DXO only using that as a tactic to get people to switch over to the new version?

You write that a coming update "will hopefully also allow Nik collection adjustments to be made directly to raw files rather than just tiffs or jpegs." Please note that the Nik collection now works as a plug-in to Photoshop allowing adjustments to the XXX.PSD file.

Agree: "I would encourage anyone who's interested in the Nik software to download it now while it's still available for free."

In reading the bankruptcy blurb, I sensed strong marketing blather. Get ready to pay for future releases of Nik software as if necessary.

Meanwhile, my free version of the Nik software has no apparent bugs in it. But the blurb intends to raise doubt by implying bugs exist in the software. I smell sales talk here.

I had zero problems with my paid version, though its HDR module wasn't compatible with PS Elements. This was stated in the Nik download info area. But there has always been the ability to open each section of software directly (without a host), though you could only work on a jpg or tiff.

I too have not experienced any crashes or bugs with my version of NIK I’m running on IMac X El Capitan and PS6
Let’s all hope NIK survives!

As a user of DXO Photolab I'm also hoping the new version of the NIk collection will integrate seamlessly into their raw post-processing software similarly to their other add-on packages. For instance DXO Film Pack is available as a standalone program for anyone to use but integrates into Photolab in such a way that it looks like it was built in to the core functionality rather than having to transfer a file to it, edit it there, and then return to the main program.

I spent quite a lot on my original modules before I was entitled to the rest of the suite before it went completely free. Works great for me as stands. I will be very interested to hear if future "improved" versions are worth the $$-layout. So far the only bugs I find can be easily remedied with the spot-removal tool.
