The problem with those modes with a sport like lacrosse hockey basketball and other sports like that where other players can come into the frame the camera can chose the wrong thing to focus on. You give up some control of what you want to focus on. The problem is not focus mode it is definately a mechanical problem. It’s also not something that happened previously. This is a new issue. So if no settings have been changed and it is a new problem it’s not likely a setting.

3D tracking is the exception to what you are saying. It uses color information to help track the main subject. If a player on the field is wearing say a red jersey, it will continue to stay locked on to the subject who is wearing red.

It sounds like with your camera that it is a mechanical problem. I'm not sure what caused that change.

That is true but isn’t the problem with 3D comes in when there are 9 players with Red jerseys on the feild and they are moving in different planes but cross in front of each other? Never had good results with 3D and team sports.
But like I said it really is not a problem of focus jumping. The problem is pressing the ae button does not always activate the auto focus. I think the first solution is to clean the contacts. Probably the most obvious but the one I completely overlooked.
Thanks for the replies.

Thank you to everyone who replied with advice! It turned out to be very simple. I cleaned the contacts on the lens and body and now it is focusing as good as new.
