Good first look! Super images. Sharp and clear. Did you have to do any adjustments to the lens or straight out of the box? Thank you for posting.

Thank you!

This is straight out of the box. I did get the dock but haven't downloaded the software yet.

The more I use the Tamron the better the results. I am getting more keepers. My shots yesterday looked similar to your post- It was an partially overcast day with no glaring mid day sun. It seems the Tamron does much better out of direct, late morning, mid day/early afternoon sun, needs some subject contrast to get those sharp edges, and using the pistol grip onto the tripod collar helps to stabilize the lens. Az sunshine is intense. So maybe I will be able to work with the lens and get it right after all. I have the dock and the software is downloaded- now I just need to dive in. Appreciate your response.

As someone else noted that this Sigma lens is on sale today at B&H. I have the Canon 100-400 mk1 version and wondering if anyone has compared the sigma to the canon mk1 vs canon mk 2 lenses? Is it worth the upgrade and if so would you consider the Sigma over the canon mk 2 version? I'm considering a trade with my canon mk1 lens.

Thanks

Dave M.

I considered this lens in a Nikon mount but it does not come with (or is designed for) a tripod mount. That killed the deal.

Have a look at some of the you tube reviews - focus is a down fall of this lens. If you want BIF and have a tight budget, CANON is your answer.

..

I had my Tamron 100-400 for about 3 months. Haven't noticed a focusing issue so far on the D850 or the D500. Must be something wrong with my lens.

To be fair I haven't. I do most of my telephoto work shooting small birds at distances between 12 and 25 feet. That's not conducive to BIF. For my type of shooting I need to focus fast because my subjects move around quickly and don't often stay in any one place longer than a few seconds. Feeders exempt but I don't shoot when they are on feeders.

BIF is difficult even for experienced shooters. Subject size, speed and distance as well as the camera's focusing modes and system, lens and most of all the shooters ability to choose the best setting and having the skill to get the shot all play a significant roll. So when I hear that some have difficulty having success, I don't pay much heed.

All I know for me this lens performs. It focuses quickly and accurately. Is it the best lens, not likely but it works great and its reasonably priced.

During the last several months I have been streaming You Tube videos on photography and looked at more reviews than most people will ever care to watch. There is so much inconsistency on the same equipment its almost comical. I think most of the reviewers should stick to their day jobs.

You may care to chack out Dustin Abbott's YouTube Channel. He reviews and compares both the Sigma and Tamron 100 - 400mm lenses with the Canon 100 - 400mm f4.5/5.6L IS II. Though I owned that particular Canon lens, if I still used Canon kit I reckon I might choose the Tamron 100 - 400mm over the Canon version. I believe that Dustin Abbott still favours the Canon, though.

Yes he is a Canon guy, but I respect his reviews. I asked him to do a Nikon comparison but he declined. At least he does a thorough job on third party lenses, the good and bad and why he thinks so.

To be honest, I am more concerned with the AF of this lens with CANON bodies .......I think the third parties have Nikon AF figured out better than Canon.
