ATIK Color Horizon camera, Hutech HEUIB-II filter, Astro-Tech 65EDQ scope, Celestron AVX mount, unguided...

Shot a number of targets over a four hour period and things worked reasonably well (for a change)

Targets: Arcturus, M13, M64, M82-M81 (Live Stacked & PixInsight Aligned & Stacked), M106 and Jupiter.

Enjoy!

Your work with the Horizon Camera is excellent Brian I am going to order mine next week. Thanks for sharing your experience with it.

Mono or color?

I'm seriously thinking about selling my mono ATIK 428Ex and mono Infinity and buying a mono Horizon. My dealer indicated they'd be interesting in doing a trade-in.

At present I'm working on getting a good white balance with the color Horizon. The images are too green but I guess that is to be expected with a RGGB Bayer filter.

Yeah I was thinking that the filter you use was causing the blue/green effect. But the imaging is really nice.

Actually the HEUIB-II and STC Multi-Spectra filters both do a reasonable job correcting image color but the standard RGGB Bayer filter in a color camera leans towards green.

Green color cast resolved! I remembered that I actually had Rogelio Andreo's Hasta La Vista, Green Photoshop plug-in. Works like a charm.

I used the plug-in about a decade ago when I was using QHY's 8 Pro color camera. Forgot that I had the plug-in.

Comparison, before and after Hasta La Vista, Green action. A really good image would be somewhere between these two!

All wonderful shots, bwana BUT what were the "particulars" on the Jupiter shot?

Particulars:

20x0.01 sec, 19x0.05 sec., Gain: 1, Offset: 1, 36 of 39 subs aligned and stacked in RegiStax. The 0.05 sec. subs were shot to better catch Jupiter's moons. I tried a few subs at the Horizon's shortest exposure (0.001 sec.) to see if I could get some surface features but the planet was still overexposed.

Thank You ... I have a Celestron C8 deluxe, Nikon D610 can be mounted in prime focus or piggy backed (with a Nikkor 24mm-85mm). For that matter I can mount the camera on its own tripod. Not familiar with your ATIK Color Horizon camera so would your times work with my rig?

I also have a Celestron 8" EdgeHD and quite often use a Sony A7S or A7R II on it. For Jupiter, Saturn and Venus exposures of 1/100 sec. at ISO 100 would be a good place to start. Whatever works for the Moon works reasonably well for planets; they have about the same surface brightness.

An example with details at: Jupiter, A7S, C8 EdgeHD

Clear skies!
