Neck Strap versus Wrist Strap

When I fell with my camera on a wrist strap, the camera was clocked at about 200MPH, just before it hit the sidewalk. Swinging your arms to break your fall will do that!!

I now use Optech neck straps with the strap and connecter on each end for easy release without having to swing the strap over my head. I generally wear a full brim hat to shade my neck and face, so the releases allow me to undo one end and just pull the strap free. (either side)

I bought the "Altua Rapid Fire Camera Strap" and it has performed very well with my Nikon D3300 DSLR + my heaviest lens, the Nikon 55-200. I also purchased a plastic (sturdy) belt holster, which I use quite a bit, Ebay has oodles of them to choose from online. I have never owned or used a wrist strap, although I may in the future, your suggestions will be appreciated.

The optec harnesses are my favorite - I use a single/elastic strap that allows me to even wear it with the camera with a 18-55 lens (I have not tried it with my new tamron 18-200)while driving in roadside photo trips - the dual camera harness with it's lg yoke is great for both caring 2 cameras or a heavy single loaded with battery pack and heavy lens

The speed at which a camera hits the pavement using a wrist strap is immeasurable. Please don't ask me how I know?

I use Op-tech neck straps with quik releases at each end, so that a camera can be removed from around your neck by detaching either one of the ends.

Somebody mentioned a secure strap. I do carry a sling bag which has a steel cable threaded into the strap for the "slash and grab thieves". I was warned to do this by the tourism board when I went to Peru/Andes.

I also have a firearms concealed carry bag with a pocket for the gun, and a steal cable in the strap. Sporting goods shops that have firearms are a good source of protection carry methods guarding against "slash and grab".

In fact about 26 years ago a 20 party group of us were warned NOT to even come to Peru due to gang activity and some killings on the Andes Trail. We didn't go!

Wrist strap no! Too much danger to you and anyone within flailing distance if you go down hard.

Consensus ? LOL ... ROTFLMFAO !

Nevertheless, I like a wrist strap on
a pocketable camera. A neck strap
is just less pocketable, but I like to
know when using a camera that is
NOT safely around my neck that if
I get bumped or whatever, a slip of
grip for a moment will not see the
camera pop loose and hit the floor,
or ground ... especially leaning out
over a railing at great height !

I don't need a wrist strap heavy
duty enuf to tote the camera by
the strap. It's only a safety loop
against momentarily letting go.

Other than M43 or Sony a6XXX,
or anything else that petite, I'm
always using neck straps. In real
terms, I keep one Sony and one
ultra-mini M43 around that seem
to ALWAYS have a wrist strap and
everything else, many-many else,
ALWAYS have their neck straps. If
I had just 1 or 2 cameras I would
use easy-to-unclip neck straps so
as to easily reassign strap types.

My personal ways are fixed. I am
not influenced by horror stories no
matter how gruesomely told or the
"exciting" physics involved. And, I
disabled my airbags. But, I always
wear my seat belt ;-)

SMDP. YMMV.

What is the consensus on neck vesus wrist straps? Also any suggestions on comfortable neck straps? I will be in Europe for a month and am not sure which would be better. Thanks.

I purchased a Altura "Rapid Fire" Camera Strap, which I feel works very well, sturdy, Good Quality product, carries my Nikon D3300 & 55-200 Nikon lens very well, Camera "Slides" easily up to my Eye for my next "Shot".
I also purchased on E-bay, a hard plastic "Belt Holster" which I have used quite often, my Nikon D3300 with the 55-200 lens sits very comfortably on my Hip, easy to retrieve to take my next "Shot".
Although, obviously if you do not normally wear a "Belt" this "Belt-Holster" will not work for you.
