I went to pick up this birdhouse because I wanted to hang it on a post. But I saw something stick it's head out and put it back in very fast. I knew it wasn't a bird. So I looked in the hole and someone was looking out at me. I think it's a little red squirrel. Guess I won't be hanging up this birdhouse for awhile. (Not the greatest picture because all I had was my cell phone.)

Actually, it might be a flying squirrel. I didn't even know they were in our area, as they only come out at night. (Our cat brought two to our front porch recently, poor things.)

One year when I went to investigate what was sticking its head out of my birdhouse... it turned out to be a tiny tree frog!

If its a flying squirrel it will not have any white around its eyes, and they do come out during day, but mostly at night. I have a video of one on my hanging suet feeder eating during the day, I stood within 3 feet of him and filmed him and he never did run away he was so hungry. I finally stopped and walked back in house and left him to eat.
