Today I decided to feed the local dove. This bird is very wary because there are so many cats lurking around. (I counted 5 just watching the feeder). I felt lucky to get a few snaps of this beautiful bird. 10 years ago..you would never see these birds in this part of Oregon...I believe the warmer climate has brought them to this area.

That is a Eurasian Collared Dove, a transplant from South West Asia/Middle East. First they spread to Europe and other areas then some people brought them over for their gardens in the Bahamas in the 70's, by about 80 or 81 they were on the US Mainland. By 2001 they had made it to California. They are basically everywhere from SW Canada to Southern Mexico and still spreading. They have not made it into New England and SE Canada - probably because of the weather.
Look here and click on Maps at the top to see where they now exist in No America.
Their near cousins the African Collared Dove are also spreading, I get both in my backyard here in So California on a regular basis (daily).
Thank you for the information about this beautiful bird. Also in my neighborhood is an almost pure white dove that I've seen a handful of times flying with these type of doves. I hope to catch it in my viewfinder someday.. It has truly been a great day...I learned something new and have had the privilege to photograph this dove... :>) trainespotter
Very nice set, trainspotter!
Beautiful shots! I shot (with a camera!) a dove sitting on her eggs today. I'll have to try to post it.
