Maybe not Typical, but this is what I Like About Macro

To be honest while I don't dislike bugs I have no great affection for them. I've little interest in remembering their scientific name or the intimate details of their lifecycle (although my interest has been peaked a couple of times especially when I've captures a spider attached to it'™s egg sack or a parasite). However I do like the surprising detail that a half decent macro photograph can reveal.

Take today:

The sun is shining in Wales, a rare event, so I was in the garden tidying up Mrs B's raised garden boxes. My camera was primed and ready hoping to find some colourful bug to photograph. As is often the case all I found was a couple of rather dull looking grubs. Once the boxes were cleared it was out with my camera and what a surprise, maybe a bit disappointing on the colourful side but the patterns were amazing. The first thing I noticed was the light band down it's side which I'm I sure is there for a purpose not just good looks. And how many eyes does it have, ok I know they are not eyes but that'™s the only way I can describe them. If you zoom in on one of the curled up shots you can see details of their ....feet?

While not of the high quality often seen on this forum I've shared a couple to prove that even Wales has interesting bugs.

Fun!! I too like the details found in macro . I think these morph into interesting beetles. Even more fun!

Nice textures! I too get lost in these sorts of details. Caterpillars have clusters of what are called 'simple eyes', rather than the standard compound eyes that are known in insects. Each simple eye has a single lens and a bundle of light receptor cells. They see just light, and I don't think they can form an image. Among the appendages seen here are the pair of larger appendages that emerge forward from the head. Those are the antennae. Of course all this gets completely replaced (not rebuilt -- replaced) by new eyes and antennae and so on during metamorphosis.
Sorry about the details. I am compelled to go on a bit too long. :)

Thanks for commenting Don, yes macro is a most enjoyable hobby even if it’s a bit frustrating at times.

Apology not necessary Mark, I’ve impressed my children more than once with my bug knowledge, all gleaned from this forum.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Thanks Brenda.

“Loving them” may be a step too far although, to be honest, I am much more appreciative and concerned for their welfare now than I was a couple of years ago. I halted the building of a swing for my Grandson last week while I waited for a spider to move from behind a bracket. Mrs B thinks I’ve lost it ……… :-))
