I presently have a Lumix, I would like a new camera and can"t chose between canon vs nikon. Can someone give me some help? I know preference is a factor, and that both are similar. Just looking for some great shots

both are going to give you great shots :). I shoot Nikon, so I might be able to answer any questions about that. I would go with the best that you can get for your budget, and I would hold each one in your hand and see how it feels and which setup you like best.

Lori, one thing most people here will most likely say it is the photographer not the camera that gets the shots. Nikon and Canon both make great equipment, the determining point for myself was cost, I found the Canon equipment more within my budget then the the Nikon.

Thanks, I agree, it's all on the person taking the photo. Right now leaning toward canon. Have a good one.

Lori, I would look each one over before deciding. Make sure it feels right in your hands and the controls are where you want them to be. My friend shoots Canon and she's happy with her 60D. Are you deciding between 2 different models or you haven't gotten that far yet?

I am not pushing Nikon, I'm just saying. I bought my first DSLR sight unseen. In the end I made the right choice so all is well, but it could have been a disaster!!

Hi Lorri,
The best is the one that feels best in your hands. Close your eyes and pick them up. The one that sits better in your hands is the one you will use most and therefore the best for you.
I use Nikon, really comfortable for me.
Hope that helps.

You really cannot go wrong with either manufacturer for an SLR (no so with point & shoots however).

Suggest you do the following:
1) See which mfg is best supported in your area by a qualified photography shop.
2) Which mfg do most of your photography aware friends use? (Readily available support and help and advice for accessories, like lenses)
3) Go handle one and see how intuitive it is to use (ergonomics, not menu terminology clarity)
4) Once you have a model in mind, do some on-line research using qualified reviews vs. individual opinions.

The more informed you are the better you will like your decision. But don't worry; there is not a bad choice here, just personal and practical preferences.

That is a question as old as Digital photography itself. Many writers here will extoll the virtues of the system they use. Truth is, either will give you the widest variety of selections and options on the market today. You need to lay out a list that describes the exact features that YOU want in a camera first, then add a bottom dollar price that you can afford to pay for those features. One BIG point to keep in mind is future expandability, don't restrict yourself as you will definitely want to grow as your experience builds and your creativity deepens.
Once you have your criteria laid out and your price set, then it will be easier to help you in a selection. Good luck!

i flipped a coin when i got into dslr........canon came up heads.

canon and nikon are both great...and both have their "pitfalls".

if i had it to do over.....i would probably choose nikon.....and this opinion is only based on the d800 with a 36meg pixel photo.
i know the wolves are going to come out now......but i know that the more pixels in a photo...the more you can pull out in raw.

i have a friend that finally got his d800....and he can take his 2.8 lenses and shoot in almost dark....he shoots 2 stops underexposed to get the shutter speed he is after...and can ALWAYS bring up the exposure 2 stops in lightroom and photos are awesome. plus he gets very little noise shooting about 20,000 ISO. that alone would make nikon my choice.

i have too much money in lenses and canon stuff to make the change now.......but if i ever get a cash windfall or hit the lottery...i'll be heading to nikon country.

i am very satisfied with my canon shots......especially after taking mtshooters advice and buying the 70-3200mm2.8 OS lens......but to get that over 30 meg photo would make me change.

to most people, this would not make a difference.

and, of course, it's just my unchanging opinion.

Been working with both platforms for quite a while. I've developed some preferences for one or the other depending on the type of work; but, if you take images from comparable cameras of both makers and compare them, you'll find that you'll need a microscope to define the differences. Most of us don't look at our pix that way so it boils down to which platform feels more ergonomically comfortable to you. Play with them and pick the one you think plays nicest! BTW forget about technical differences. the companies leapfrog each other so there isn't a constant, and the photographer matters much more anyhow.
