Going to Scottsdale Az. Never been there. Any suggestions as to photo opportunities in the area, where to go, things to do, places to eat. Will be there 5 days in time share daughter had and she was gonna lose it if she didn’t use it, she couldn’t, we can.

I would take a trip up to Sedona at least, if not to the Grand Canyon. In Sedona there are many photo ops. Check out Cathedral Rock, Chapel of the Holy Cross, Devils Bridge (Arch). I know it is a stretch considering this next one, but Horseshoe Point near Paige makes a great photo.

If you get down around Tucson, there is mission San Xavier del Bac, Old Tucson movie set, Saguaro Cactus National Monument, and the Amerind Foundation museum. On the way is old Jerome mining town. Going up toi Sedona, along the way is the Montezuma Castle cliff dwelling, and of course the red rocks around Sedona are stunning.

I doubt that you would be interested, but the dam where I was born is northeast of Scottsdale, near Cave Creek--Bartlett Dam--and it forms Bartlett Reservoir, the main water source for Phoenix and a site of water sports.

You might want to check out Goldfield Ghost Town. Also, the Lost Duchman Mine SP.

Although Scottsdale is closer to the Grand Canyon, than say Chicago, you seem to be asking about ideas in the general Phoenix area rather than general Arizona, as a trip to Sedona that is a 2-hour 1-way drive, the Grand Canyon is 3.5 hours.

In the Scottsdale area, consider the state capitol building and state monuments in downtown Phoenix. On the east side, the same as Scottsdale, are the the Phoenix Zoo and the Desert Botanical Garden. You can go hiking around or to the tops of the several mountain parks in the city: Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak, South Mountain. Temps are already in the 90s in PHX, be sure to bring sunscreen and water and go early or late in the day if you're not used to desert hiking, even within the city limits.

A rather ritzy shopping area is in / around the Biltmore Fashion Park. Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the US. You name it, you'll find it somewhere.

The desert should be in full bloom by the time you get here so don't miss a trip just riding around. The Phoenix Zoo is nice and the Garden with it make for a day trip. For a great steak check out Flemings in Scottsdale. Oregano's in nice if you want a decent pizza.

If you go to the Grand Canyon make it a two day trip, one to drive up and see the Canyon and one to drive back. It's about a 4 hour drive from Scottsdale.

In Scottsdale there is a Butterfly Wonderland with over 2000 butterflies flying around. It's a great take. Right next door is an aquarium which is also a great take. North of there is a zoo called Out of Africa. It's a great zoo with lots of different animals and a tiger show. You get to feed the giraffes too. Obviously Sedona and a great take. If you are an early riser look for hot air balloons as they take off at sunrise. I saw 8 at one time and took about 40 pics. Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, etc.
It's a great place and you'll be able to take many pics. BTW, in Sedona the Pink Jeep Tour is really good.

Thanx for all the suggestions. Dr Nikon and wife are wearing jackets. Don’t plan on taking jackets to Az.

Will definitely try the recommendations on eating and hiking.

We have been to Grand Canyon, Sedona, Jerome just never to Phoenix and Scottsdale
Again. I knew the hogs would come through with ideas. Now I will look smart to my wife for coming up with some great ideas

Thanks again

In an around Scottsdale, I would go to the Desert Botanical Garden, probably early in the day, the Phoenix Zoo, which is next door, perhaps in reverse order and stop at Gertrude’s for lunch. Don’t miss the Musical Instrument Museum. For dinners, Vincent’s is a must. Combine great views with exceptional food at Elements. Lon’s at the Hermosa Inn is also distinctive. All require reservations.
