To ways to look at it according to your answers on your request. Don't get a DSLR or good camera and see if you like photography with a cheep one or buy a descent camera and get started with good equipment.

I don't know the real definition of either. I suggest as I did earlier go to a CAMERA Store pick up the cameras and see what is comfortable. I found that some smaller cameras are uncomfortable as the buttons are too close or a SLR is too heavy. You have to make that decision.

Have fun in the process.

buy it, then you'll learn as you go. all camera photography is basically the same Light, ISO, Shutter speed, aperture .... other aspects you'll learn as you go. if u buy a cheaper model, you'll just want that 500 when you learn a bit more.

I like yourself just started about 5 months ago. I did however decide to go with a canon T3 mainly because the camera was on sell with two kit lenses for 150 cleareance from Walmart. The good thing is that even though it is a crop camera you can still use full frame lens as long as they have the EF mount gthats most common on Canon. Most lenses I buy are full fram lens so if the day comes that I decide to buy a full frame camera the lenses will interchange. I will tell you that it will take some time for you to grow out of that camera because there is a lot more to learn then just pointing and shooting. money is always the deciding factor and every year new cameras come out just like phones and computers. from everything I learned so far good glass makes the photograph whether its on a 3000 dollar sony or 300 dollar canon.

Thank you for the Nikon view. The OP, however, may wish to consider fully the Canon view given his comment about compatibility with his companion's use of an EOS camera from Canon.

Between the two digital camera systems really only two objective measures overall stand out as differences. One, as a rule, Nikon gear of a similar type costs more than its Canon counterpart, so say experts.

Two, Canon leads in market share, and thus likely offers the photographer more selection from more third-party vendors.

Meanwhile, from reading discussions along these lines for years now, I sense that going with either this or that camera system involves a decision strongly influenced by emotion, which naturally puts any choice either way in the realm of subjectivity.

Of course, other camera systems exist as alternates to these two, but addressing the two presented limits the scope of useful response to the OP.

In the end, the photographic result matters more than which camera system the photographer goes with.

You've been given a lot of good and sometimes confusing information here. It boils down to this, get what you like, want and can afford. It doesn't matter why you want FF if you can afford it and want it. I prefer FF myself but I started shooting with Nikon film cameras.

If money is no object then as has been said before, the Nikon D850 is the current favorite. It has all the bells and whistles - - fast auto focus, great ISO range for low light with low noise and many more features. On the crop sensor, DX, side is the D500 which is the top of the line Nikon DX camera.

If you want a full featured camera without spending the money for the D850, then the D750 with Nikon's 24-120mm kit lens would be my choice. It gives you many features of the more expensive cameras but at a bit more reasonable price. It is a FF, FX, camera with great ISO settings for low light photography with low noise. It is a great camera for sports and the other areas in which you are interested. It is a very flexible camera and allows you to make many menu adjustments to personalize the camera for your use. The D750, D8XX, and D850 all give you the option of shooting in fully automatic mode, fully manual mode and a number of in between modes like shutter or aperture priority and more.

The 24-120mm is a great general purpose lens that will serve you well as a starting point. In time you will probably want some more specialized lenses but this is a great lens to start with.

A refurbished Nikon from Nikon, B&H Camera, Adorama and a few others would be a great deal. Watch the Nikon site and occasionally they offer a 10% discount on their refurbished gear.

Regardless of which camera you buy, if you buy Nikon, get Steve Perry's e-book on the Nikon AutoFocus System.

Good luck with whatever you choose. We all have our favorites and sometimes it is just because that is what we like. I love my D750. ☺️

Almost all newish (less than 10 years old) non entry level cameras are good enough. My D80 still rakes in beautiful pictures. LENSES can make or break a camera setup. A lens your camera can't focus will break your heart at any event. If you go with Canon, check for the popularity and availability of the lens mount- scarcity doesn't mean quality but it does mean money.

Since you are getting some informative replies I'll just add to be sure and check out the D7500. It is very much the same as the D500 in the way it functions.

The D500 is a great camera. I never hesitate to use it. I like it especially hooked up with a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 FL.
