Sony A7RII and lens

Hi all,

It's a while I don't post but for personal reasons I did not shoot much...but changed many cameras (severe GAS attack).

Now I'm settled down and satisfied with a Sony A7RII.

Problem is lens. I use Canon adapted lenses with Sigma MC-11 mainly because the FE GM lenses cost a kidney and a liver. Now I'm curious how Sony apsc lenses perform on my R2. I now that they crop and many do not recommend etc etc, but I can get a couple of E lens very cheap. I'm speaking of the 10-18 and 18-105 G.
Does anyone use them on the A7r2? How does the 18mpx image compare? I mean is it usable for non professional needs?
Anyone has tried other combinations and can give advise?
Thanks.

Yes they will work perfectly. Just make sure the camera is on crop mode. If it is on auto it will detect Sony crop lenses, but you may have to change it manually for non-Sony lenses. Even allowing for the drop to 16 -18 mpix don't expect aps-c lenses to compare with GM lenses.

Thanks. I'm aware of that but will iq be better, same or worse as if the same lens is mounted on a native crop camera?

Since it is pouring rain here and I'm bored out of my skull I decided to do an impromptu test for you.
1. Sony 18-105 G on Sony A6000 at 60mm zoom
2. Sony 18-105 G on Sony A7Rii in crop mode at 60 mm zoom.
3. Sony 90mm macro G on A7Rii at 90mm (obviously)

All shot on tripod with anti-shake turned off and 2 second timer.
All shot with flex spot focus on the word 'Chianti'
All shot with AWB
All shot at ISO 125
All shot with aperture priority at F8.0
1 and 2 shot at 1 second. #3 wanted 1.3 seconds so I left it at that.
All shots are jpeg normal SOOC.

I'm not really a pixel peeper, but I do notice a difference between the 90 macro and the 18-105. I think the 18-105 on the A7Rii has a slight edge over the A6000. Look at the scratches on the soup ladle.
The dirt and crumbs on the counter were put there for deliberately for the test. The kitchen is usually spotless!!

I hope this helps. I would be interested how others feel these shots compare.

Thanks for your testing. As someone said "decent glass will give better results on a better sensor" given excellent glass will give excellent results on excellent sensor.
So I think you are right that 18-105 will give slightly better results on the a7r2's sensor which is better than the one on a6000. Thanks for confirming.

Excellent comparison. At first glance I thought the A6000 and the A7Rii were pretty much a toss up. But after downloading and enlarging both side by side I see the image of the cork markings are clearly a bit better on the A7Rii. For those like myself who are not pixel-peepers I doubt many would be able to see the difference without a VERY close comparison. Tests like these convince me I don't need to upgrade my A6000. I keep a Sony 18-105 on one of mine and get excellent results with it. Your tests confirm my suspicions. Thanks for posting this.

I think I'll get the 18-105 with a very cheap a6000 and use it as a second body. I read the 18-105 can be used on a7r2 as video lens eith vety good results.

That 90 is great! 18-150 only gets 10 mp on the a7r2, looks the same as the a6000. A nice lens, fun to walk around with.
The 90 lens, though, really makes the difference!

What did the doctor say about your GAS? There is no sense to talk gear if you still have the slightest trace of it.
