Hello

Does anyone know of any restrictions in taking DSLR or lenses inside Taj Mahal. I have heard that they do not allow video camaras. In a way DSLR is also a video camera. Any advice ?

Photography of any kind is not allowed inside the building. Photography is allowed on the grounds outside the building.

Only structures on right as viewed from entrance are considered Holy. Structures to left were built for Architectural Symmetry.
IMO the best pictures were taken from the non-holy left side toward the holy Right side... the light works in your favor. If you shoot from right to left you shoot into the afternoon sun enjoy your trip. Too many people the other way!

Opinion based on trip 35 years ago😎

I came across a news article last week that two of Taj Mahal's minerets were blown down in storms. They will be repaired but that could mean scaffolding on the building. I hope you are not going to be disappointed.

Read all the post and make your own judgement, as opinions vary.

My wife went to the Taj about a year ago and she said there are no posts forbidding photography inside the building. However, it will be so crowded that it might prove difficult to take a decent photo.
What I know is forbidden is taking pictures of the mausoleum which is below, inside the building. There is where the Shah Jahan and his wife lie. Which takes me to a most embarrassing experience.
I went there 23 years ago and had my first camera, an Olympus film point and shoot. I went down to the mausoleum and me and my philosophy of asking for forgiveness in lieu of permission pressed the shutter. I thought I had enough light and that the flash wouldn't go off. Well, not only the flash illuminated the whole room, but what I didn't know is that it was the last frame of the roll. So, right there the camera started rolling up the film, making this loud high pitch sound for what seemed like an eternity, while EVERYONE looked scornful at me. One of those "wanna get away" moments.

Here is your answer. It took a 10 second internet search. Your welcome.

I took 2 cameras and had no issue (a friend carried the second camera for me). There will be many people offering to be a guide. We were lucky and got a guide who knew all the right spots including different angles!!
Bring a lot of water and have fun!

My best tip is get there REALLY early. I went 2 years ago and was 2nd in line at 4:45 am. At 6am when they opened, the line behind me stretched out of site. I had preplanned most of my shots, so I walked in very quickly and got dozens of shots with NO other people in tem. Priceless.

When I went, we couldn't take pictures inside, outside no problems.

I was there 20 years ago when I made three 1 month trips to India with 4x5 equipment. They would not allow a tripod into the Taj grounds so that was that. Luckily I had a Hasselblad and a few lenses so I took that in with a spare lens in my pocket. India is a funny place, just remember greasing somebody's palm can get the wheels turning.

Here's a tip. When you stand in front of the Taj there is a small road to your right. At least it was a small road 20 years ago, but walk a little way down there and you can get a great shot of the Taj from an angle different to what you might have already seen. You can include the Taj and most of the river. I was lucky as a man was saying his prayers who I asked if he would mind staying there while I went back to the car to get my tripod and 4x5. He generously did just that. Setting up the 4x5 took a little time but was worth the effort. That was one of 10 color images I made in 3 months of travel. All the rest monochrome. Those were the days....
