D800e vs D810: My wife shoots a D810,and I rarely use it...because if I should damage it no one would ever find my body. Recently, I have tried it out, and found something interesting.

My wife shoots a D810,and I rarely use it...because if I should damage it no one would ever find my body. Recently, I have tried it out, and found something interesting. The center of gravity allows me much better control with heavy lenses than my D7100 when I am hand holding using a pistol grip. And,megapixels matter.

So, not being able to afford a new D810 or even a refurb...I started looking at the D800e. Around $600 less than the 810 refurb.

I read the comparisons, and frankly don't find much difference for my purposes other than 1 fps slower.

So...opinions?

I know someone with a D800E and he shoots mainly portraits with the previous Nikon version 70-200mm f2.8. He's the Main photographer at an annual Veterans event I attend. Since you can't afford the expensive D850 or a D810, the D800E is a good choice. It was the first of the D8xx series not to have an AA filter. Good luck.

I use the 800 and the 810 at work. Never used the 800e. I’m nearing retirement, am looking at some purchases for my own. The 800 was noticeably louder and a bit softer images straight out of the camera. Other than those issues, I haven’t seen much difference, so this is a good question to watch.

Good point...the d800e is is a little different than the D800...I wonder where the softness could come from?

I use an 800E; it is obviously a great camera, produces great images, and all the camera I will ever need.
But, it has been replaced with newer models, twice now.

The optical low pass filter is different.
More HERE. For what I shoot, the plain, non “e” model is still an exceptional camera. It’s just knowing there is something else that could be better might make me thing twice. Given the option, I’d probably go with the e. I have had a moiré pattern or two to deal with on the 810, but not as much as I expected.
I had 4- 3x5 foot prints installed on a wall at work last year, shot with the D810, 800 and one with a D700. I doubt if anyone can tell which camera shot what image.

When the 800 and 800E were announced, I considered the 800, but purchased the 800E.
I have not had a problem with moir with my choice.

I got one of the very first D800E's shipped. (SN 300014) and just upgraded to the D850 last September. I tried both the D800 and D810 and neither lived up to the D800E for sharpness and color clarity. The D850 does. I would recommend the D800E over either of the others. But the D850 is definitely a step up from any of them.

I sort of had to, 318,000 shots on my D800E now, but it will be a permanent backup body to the D850. Too good to get rid of but I was getting a bit worried about the possibility of shutter failure while on a shoot.
Nikon reflects the same praise of the D800E as their tefurb of it still costs $50 more than a refurb D810.
