Try a square format. I don't think the homogeneous gray on the right
does anything to benefit the picture.

thanks for your unasked opinion, I'm fine with the negative space on the right. You see, it provides balance for the image, a simple design element

I don't need or want your "attaboys!" And I believe there is a critique section here on UHH, and I didn't post the image in that section, nor did I want it to be critiqued. And after reading a little about your background, you, of all people, should understand the rules and the elements of design. And like you, I too have been behind the camera for 50+ years, worked in my own darkroom, have taught and tutored photography, given presentations on photography, and still shoot professionally. Why don't you click on the image, it'll take you over to flickr, there you can see some of the rest of my work.

I have to agree, centering the subject would not be as pleasing as the current composition. I do kind of wish that the top portion of the purple flower was there, but that is just me, zero design talent. I still have to remind myself to not shoot everything centered on the middle! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I'm not totally happy with that clip up top either, but my shooting conditions were not too perfect. The flowers were on a center island in my kitchen, more or less side lit from a window. And like most kitchens, lots and lots of distracting stuff in the background that truly will not add to the composition. Limited by my widest aperture on this lens (24-105L) of f/4 I knew that getting closer to the subject would further blur the background. (also enhanced a bit in photoshop) Unfortunately, I clipped a snip off the top in doing so. I post pictures like this to let people know that there's always "stuff" to shoot, and you don't have to go outside to find it, or do it. My intent is simple, if someone can be inspired by my work, or learn from it, I feel I've accomplished something. Knowledge not shared is simply wasted, and snarky comments don't sit well with me. Thanks for supportive comment!

Yeah, I'm not totally happy with that clip up top ... (show quote)

Totally agree...the inside of our home, particularly the kitchen, has been photographed hundreds of times...in fact I use an island centerpiece of three ceramic chickens as one of my test targets...perhaps not as effective but more interesting to me than a bookshelf!

So many times I hear photographers saying they're in a rut, can't find anything to shoot, or simply shoot the same stuff over and over again. This post, and the last one I put up was to try to get people motivated again, to start "seeing" as I put it. We are literally surrounded every day with potential subject matter to shoot, and as I stated above, you often don't even have to leave the house. That's the beauty of digital, no processing costs involved, shoot and learn from your mistakes, try things, experiment, it's free for the learning!
