I had to send one of my zoom lens' to the facility in New York, the repair was beyond what the local Nikon repair was authorized to perform. This is the first time I have had any issue that I needed them for. Anybody have experience with them? How long is the wait, do they communicate, how was your experience, etc.

Thank you in advance
Gilbert

Forgive me but I would think you would have asked these questions of Nikon. Anything from others here on the forum would only be something like good/bad service and problem fixed satisfactory or not. The wait depends on what needs to be done. Communication is a two way street and depends on who you deal with at Nikon.

I am not trying to be contrary, just trying to explain that one customers experience may not mirror your experience.

They have a communication process that they will let you know. Now you need patience.

It's been a while since I sent a product to them for repair, but I seem to recall that I could go to the web site, enter the repair order number and the site would report back the current status of the repair. We are all anxious about such things, but a bit of patience goes a long way. When you get it back, it'll look and operate like brand new.

I get your point, but everything was done online with nobody to ask. I have been waiting since Monday for a response from their help desk, despite my repeated follow up. The issue was diagnosed by a local Nikon authorized repair facility but Nikon will not send him the assembly-it is only done at the New York shop. That's why the questions. I have a jobs coming up and was trying to get an idea of a timeline so I can make a decision on whether to rent or use this as an excuse to purchase.
Thank you for your comment.

My experience with them is as a walk-in.
They looked at the camera, gave me an estimate and said they would be in touch.
In about 10 days, they said " come and get it"

Over the years both good and not so good. Always seemed to get better service when I lived close enough to walk in.

The way I always understood Nikon, the main reason tp buy Nikon is to use their glass. If something fails on a lens of Nikons you send it back to Nikon for repair because they have the expertise and equipment to repair it properly. The understanding I have is Nikon is the only authorized repair facility. If you have a problem then get in touch with their customer service dept, I understand that no one wants to be without their equipment for any length of time but have faith they are really good.

If you send me your name and work order number, I'll contact someone directly at Nikon for you Monday morning. I cannot give out my contact information. Private message me with your information if you wish.

Nikon has authorized repair facilities and will show a list for a particular item when you start the online process of sending something for repair. Not all facilities are authorized for every item. Sending something to Nikon does not guarantee it will be repaired by Nikon. They outsource repairs, without notifying the customer, even if you request in house service.

I had one lens last year that no Nikon facility in the U.S. was allowed to work on. It went to Nikon Labs in Japan.

I've had no problems. The length of time depended on the work being done and what was required. I have had to wait several weeks before, but as I recall that may have been the sensor replacement. In any case, I would not send out my camera if I needed it in less than 30 days, just in case. They have always notified me via email of the cost and work being done, although it's usually more of a quick comment on what will be done, nothing in detail.

Thank you all for your input. It is scheduled to arrive Wednesday. They have already charged my card for the repair, so hopefully it will be fairly quick. About 10 days plus shipping time I can live with. My fear was a month or more.
