This was in the yard when I got home yesterday. What is it?
It looks like a Northern Harrier, aka Marsh Hawk. Pretty close match to the picture in my field guide. Can't see enough detail toward the end of the tail to be positive.
Do you find these in Maryland?
Is that where this was taken...Md? It would help to know. Coopers, yes. Gray kestrel, no.
Pretty sure it’s a Coopers, due to the reddish eye color.
Coopers or Sharp-shinned then, depending upon size.

The Cornel Labs Merlin app brings a Cooper’s hawk up for this photo.
What ever it is...it's a very pretty bird.

It’s really hard to make an accurate ID between the Coopers Hawk and the Sharp-shinned Hawk without seeing the tail...but it’s definitely an adult noted by the red eyes. Nice capture
Thanks for all the help on identifying the bird. I could not see the tail and he didn't stay there long enough for me to get a better picture.
It’s an Oomegooli hawk,it has short legs, when it lands on hard ground it shouts out oomegooli,😹
