I don't believe it said anywhere the DSLR is 'Dead', lead in caption said the 'DSLR rein is almost over' and as technology progresses, it most likely will be, the competition is becoming very stiff. 'If' Nikon and Canon release a high end Mirrorless, then yes Mirrorless will continue to increase its future market share by large margins. As technology develops, and it will, the direction is apparently FF Mirrorless. That doesn't mean that DSLR's will be 'DEAD' by any means, it means the future is most likely Mirrorless....companies will start to place their technology on Mirrorless or be left behind, but the current crop of DSLR's will still remain relevant for years, maybe decades to come.

Its only relevant when you want/need to upgrade in the future will you stay with current DSLR technology or go Mirrorless if the technology is there? Not that much difference between the Nikon 850 and the Sony A7Riii according to reviews. And when Canon enters the high end Mirrorless world?......Oh the Horror if Nikon & Canon develop a high end Mirrorless.....just food for thought....😉😉

The war of the viewfinders may be coming to an end. Interesting article on DP Review. Some quotes: -

"This year we sat down with leaders from (in alphabetical order) Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Ricoh, Sigma, Sony and Tamron to learn more about how they see the market, and to get an indication of what might be coming down the road.

Full-frame mirrorless will become the norm, and it will happen pretty soon

This year, almost all the executives we spoke to seemed to agree on one thing: full-frame mirrorless will become the norm, and it will happen pretty soon.

..... One is the mirrorless market: new, energetic, and increasingly packed with advanced autofocus systems and high-end video features. And the other is the DSLR market, dominated by increasingly non-essential iterative updates at the low-end..... "

Nikon seems to be conspicuous by its absence.

New cameras have bells and whistles that allow those who know how to use those bells and whistles to take great photographs a little easier or quicker - they don't generally allow users to take better photographs. I haven't seen any photos yet that are better than some of my better photos taken with a 4x5 view camera that I had decades ago. Many still use such cameras. A lot of us old timers remember the excitement of having a camera with a built-in light meter - WOW! And THEN - a camera that could actually automatically adjust your aperture and/or shutter speed based on lighting! Those were exciting times - but many people still hung on to their light meters - I have one somewhere in storage!

I don't see many of us switching from a full-frame DSLR to a FF mirrorless - they are not really smaller and not that much lighter. Especially if we have to buy new glass!

I would answer you but I have to go out and hand-crank my horseless carriage to get it started..... Obviously the fewer moving parts, the better, so cameras will obviously all be mirrorless pretty soon. And I have wondered for years why a shutter is needed - why not just a 1/500th of a second (or whatever you want) sampling of the output from the sensor?

Left my Heavy DSLR home on my China trip, instead took two light mirrorless 4/3 cameras along. Never gonna happen again.

What is not going to happen again? Leave the DSLR home or take the 2 mirrorless..

An electronic viewfinder can't match the clarity of an optical viewfinder. There's no chance of lag with an optical viewfinder. There will always be people who prefer an optical viewfinder.

Absolutely, I prefer my old 'Drum' brakes to the new Disc brakes

Yes Nikon seems to be in "listening mode" only....perhaps in a year or two....they have a "Z" mount system in the works. Watch out for the strong silent type.

I would love to see a FF system from Olympus!

In the meantime I will enjoy my DSLR until the mirror falls off...by that time ML will really be nice.

I saw that article. It depends how you define "almost." To me, a DSLR is a real camera. I've been using SLRs since the 1970s, so that's my camera of choice. Will non-DSLRs soon be better than any available DSLR? I doubt I'll live that long.

Both Canon and Nikon are working seriously on mirrorless. Stay tuned.
