I'm spending next week in the Shenandoah Valley area. What are your suggestions for photo opportunities in that area?

Try Luray Caverns or any of the other many caverns in the area.

Travel some of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Plenty of scenic overlooks and photo ops.

The Blue Ridge Parkway has many very pretty spots. It's twisty and the speed limit is low so distance as the crow flies is not a good indication of travel time. It follows the ridge line and there are many spots to pull off the road to take photos or take a walk.
The rivers and creeks are rocky and fast flowing so opportunities are there also.

Hopefully, you'll see the Blue Ridge Parkway is mostly south of the Shenandoah Valley ... However, the 105-miles of the Skyline Parkway in the Shenandoah National Park provides a similar experience. The 100-mile distance North - South can be a significant difference on candidate ideas if you're limited on time. I'd much rather spend time visiting ideas near my location rather than driving much of the day to a far away experience.

I concur with all of the above comments. I travelled the length of the Sky Line drive to the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway, twice on my motorcycle. It was awesome many photo opportunities. Just be aware of the animals, deer, dears will pop out of nowhere...additional photo opps, and road hazards.

Absolutely right - been a long while since I was up there. They do connect as I remember.

I'm glad to see we've established the Blue Ridge parkway is not part of the Shenandoah valley, the Skyline Drive is.

I too have ridden a motorcycle from Front Royal to Cherokee and the other way also.

You should set aside at least a whole day to do the drive, it's gorgeous up there, although the 'big' mountains are farther south.

Lurray cavern was mentioned and unless you get the hebejebes in a cave, it's a must see.
If you're into museums, there are lots of them there.

As for photo opportunities, the Shenandoah valley is one big photo opportunity.
I've been there probably more than a dozen times and every time I go back I see things I have not seen on a previous trip.

Have fun and bring lots on memory cards.

Of course most here will be suggesting the Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive. Both are on the tops of mountains.
I don't deny that there are beautiful pictures to be had there.
If you are maybe interested in flowers in the Shenandoah Valley, you might look into visiting Andre Viette , 994 Long Meadow Road , Fishersville, VA 23229
He is a gardening expert and has a beautiful Garden there at his home. He majors in raising Day Lilies.
He is in the valley.

Hope this helps.

Charles

The countryside on both the ridge and the valley are beautiful. Take the time to wander on foot on the trails at the rest stops and in the guide books. Springtime is fabulous and there are wild specimens of flowers and shrubs and trees that command a very high price in the nursery. Mr. & Mrs. Google is your friend.

on skyline drive dark Hollow Falls there are other falls on the road, you'll have to look em up AND you'll need to be sure of what trail to follow as they are poorly marked/. you may be close to natural Bridge which is pretty cool and if you do get to natural Bridge, find the town of Glasgow not far away , every building, every business, every home has a dinosaur. lots of cool and also strange shots there. The town is small blink and you'll miss it. there is also a few river trip places if your into that, also and I wish I could find it again. maybe u can find it online, an old store ( tourist trap) but it has lots of very old farm machinery. great shots there, but for the life of me I cant find it again.

If you do get to Natural Bridge: if you arrive near to closing time, no admission fee and a light show; ask the bus driver or the ticket taker for directions to the Pink Cadillac Diner (cool place, good food)

Shenandoah Valley ends just north of Roanoke (James River) and there are hundreds & hundreds of photo opportunities but you need to be off the beaten path. Don't be limited to Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive, many of the towns have numerous photo ops, Lexington for example, Washington & Lee & VMI. Dark Hollow Falls, Apple Orchard Falls and others falls are great places but be advised, you'll have to hike to many of them. Lunch at the Cadillac Diner south of Lexington is interesting, its an America dive, used to eat there weekly with our buddies. Natural Bridge and the dirt track races are great if you're into that. Hwy 11 is far better the I-81, one of the worst interstates in the country (trucks & traffic). I-64 heading to WV has some scenic spots, the Homestead in Hot Springs is worth a trip, beautiful country. Slide over to mountain range to Monterrey and check out that area, beautiful, beautiful area. There's just so much to see....Enjoy your trip

Have fun. Don't forget bug spray. Also if you walking around in the woods make sure you check for ticks when you finished.
