Don't remember where I saw it, but even Canon recommends the III extenders only for the newer lenses.

FWIW, since a friend has the 1.4X III, I will do a test on the 400 prime AND the 100-400 II AND, the 100-400 I - using both the II and III 1.4X - should be interesting .....

These were taken a few weeks ago in Sarasota, Florida with the Canon 2x III Extender and 70-200 f/2.8 II. They are cropped quite a bit IIRC. Unfortunately I don't have a 1.4 Extender at this point but I am sure the III will do excellent based on other friends use of it.
