My new Sony arrives next week. I want to be able to remotely release the shutter, mostly for family portraits, from about 10-15 feet away. What's the best solution? I see Sony makes a wireless remote which seems to do more than just release the shutter but I've not found much feedback on it.

Mike, I have the cheap Sony wireless remote which works great ...., as long as you are in front of the camera. It will not work if you are on the side, or in back of, the camera (infrared?). Don't know which one you are looking at but, if releasing the shutter from other than in front of the camera is important, be sure to check this out before making a purchase.

Go to B&H or Adorama, check out remotes. If the connector to the camera is correct, a $25.00 Vello remote will work from anywhere within 25 or so yards. I've used one for several years and it's still working fine.

It seems Sony like to put the IR sensor on the front of the camera, so any IR remote has to be triggered from in front of the camera or from an angle but where the sensor can see the beam. If it's the same for the A7iii, you'll likely need a wired remote or a wireless remote with the sensor that mounts on the hotshoe.

If your main use will be family portraits this $10 IR remote should fill the bill.
I have one that works on both my A77ii and my A6500.
The A7ii is listed so I expect it will work with the A7iii.

PlayMemories has an app that lets you release the shutter with your phone. It’s free and it works. I use it all the time

I bought one on eBay. It works perfectly - cost US $4.68 delivered!

I have the same remote and it works well on my A6300, however, the A7iii has its IR sensor on the front of the camera, so you have to be positioned at an angle that lets the camera's sensor "see" the IR beam, which may or may not be convenient.

If you want a grip that comes with a wireless remote control for your A7III, check out the Meike battery grip. It fits A7III, A7RIII and A9. The wireless remote control can be used as an intervalometer, timer and bulb control as well just as a remote trigger. It is $122 US now vs the Sony grip (with no remote) for $348. I have this Meike grip for my new Sony A7III (got it Friday) and it also fits my A7RIII. I have used Meike grips before and they work great. It is a radio trigger so it works from up to 100 feet away and doesn't matter where the camera is in relationship to the trigger.
They are less expensive because they come from China. I also previously bought the Sony remote trigger, but as other mentioned, it works best from the front.

On my Sony A77II, the infrared shutter tripping remote has a limited range. It was a night "photo safari and I wanted to use myself as an element in the photo against the backdrop scene. To my chagrin, I found that , even in the absence of interfering daylight, the range was only about 12-15 feet.

I have not had occasion to use a remote shutter release on my new Sony A7III. Can camera shake be eliminated for long exposure shots by using the built-in timer?

(I hope this isn't too far off topic, but it got me wondering). Thanks.

camranger.com not only will let you shoot 15' away but extend distance up to 150'...Wait it gets better, you can adjust your camera setting remotely as well, & use a large screen iPAD (for seeing details) or iPhone! http://camranger.com you can also focus remotely. The batteries last for 6 hours! You can shoot in RAW+JPEG and the Camranger will use the JPEG so that you will get instant playback! If you do any wild life shooting its again ideal!
No need to use dangerous tether cables!
I use it in a studio to set my lighting wirelessly, as I can adjust the umbrella angles and heights, holding my iPAD in hand, using live view, to get that perfect lighting...
