Steve we also have a Sony RX100 and it will focus just fine by placing the focus indicators (small square on your screen, ours appears as green when focused) on your subject and gently release the shutter. That is an impressive little camera. Ours is the first generation and does not have a view finder.

Problem is in the time the bee remains "posed" and also many scenes are at ground level. Therefore not possible to use the led display focus indicator really in any situation. Only have a few seconds to compose and shoot.
