More and more of the posts are crude and rude and even painful to read. Just because some one doesn't have the knowledge and experience of some of the Hogs does not make them stupid. Everyone was a beginner once.

A sign of the times I guess. Drivers are ruder...(tailgating, speeding, hand gestures for any small reason), customers tapping on cellphones while your trying to help them. Stammering while waiting in lines....the list is endless now days. We always hope to fine a peaceful space to relax and dialog. I believe this site offers such a place....but sometimes we have issues at home or work that translate into being "snippy" with others. I'm guilty of that myself. (retirement helps some by not having such a demanding schedule.) Peace to all the great photographers. I will do my best to listen intently, learn and offer encouragement when I can. respectfully trainspotter

It's not that alone. It's also, your opinion is different than mine, therefor it must be wrong. And then they go on to criticize you about it.

Like the "gentleman" who criticized a writer about his spelling of "lens". Or, the "gentleman" who criticized my opinion regarding some petroglyphs in Utah.

It's not just about intolerance, it's about criticism, which, if not asked for, is seldom desired or appreciated.

I think this post/comment should be more aimed at 'seasoned pros', who might be at times mildly irritated if someone asks something they deem "too rudimentary" and therefore brush it off with less than stellar responses, particularly if their responses require additional clarifications.
(However, come to think of it, it doesn't just pertain to photography, but to many facets of life.)
...And I've established for myself a long time ago that photography, similar to painting, is quite a lonely/'lone wolf' occupation/hobby, where you achieve improvements all on your own and mostly by trial and error and MAYBE occasionally by asking for an advice.
Other times you may see something others do that sparks your inspirational curiosity -- again followed with subsequent experimentations all on your own.
We, photographers, figuratively speaking, don't "play in a band', where we are a part of a larger collective thinking - instead, everyone is to him/herself.
So, I guess, those of us who've achieved higher "moral grounds of notoriety & knowledge" could occasionally share their professional empirical knowledge with those still in search and do it in a friendly and helpful manner, without conveying a sense of annoyance.

My 2.5 cents.

I'd suggest more pro-active actions you can perform yourself. See the Report Issue under every post? Click that and you get several drop-down options. They go to ADMIN's inbox when sent and are specific to the post where clicked. There's an option for inappropriate language. It may not be swearing that was negative, but you can report what you perceive as being outside the accepted norms of behavior, include a comment with your report. Will it make a difference? A number of similar reports about the same user and / or their comments does have an impact. A particularly negative yahoo was run out of here in the past few weeks and a clique of yahoos were removed a few years ago.

Meanwhile, you can block an offensive user so you don't see threads they start, if any. You can also unwatch any topic that has gone south.

I have spent my whole life trying to be positive. For my family, kids, grandkids I try and keep a positive outlook.

Most folks on here are kind, intelligent and helpful. I admitted in new topic that I was struggling with flash/strobe.
Even though I owned strobes years ago. I have devoted a lot of time to video in recent years. And stills sometimes.
The posts were so helpful. Websites and links to great information. Gracious kind informative replies. Thanks

I mentioned the other day on the Sony RX10 III that Ken Rockwell's extensive review got me more interested.
I bought the camera and was amazed myself and what quality and uses with the 24 600 Zeiss lens.

A reviewer made a nasty comment about Rockwell for no apparent reason in his post after me. I have used Rockwell
as a resource for years. And found him to be pretty honest about gear. If you want to purchase a new or used Nikon
Lens this is the best resource.

In general I have found more nastiness in our society today and it is now showing up here with most folks being great.

Neither have I. There have been some truly rude people on here—most have been suspended or banned—there are about five that I can recall.

Critiques should be a given on a photography forum. There have been some recent posts characterized as rude—that aren’t—just overly sensitive people. This forum represents a slice of humanity; Accept the help that is offered and turn the page.

Early during my time here, someone here asked how a particular body, lens combination worked; I had just taken several pictures with that combination, so l posted them. Immediately another newcomer blasted me for posting "snapshots". I had been well-meaning - but not very useful since I didn't know about "(save original)" - so I've just "kept on trucking".

However, every once in awhile there is a nugget of information that turns out to be useful. You don't have to read every post and you can see who posted right away so don't read posts of people you have found to be rude, and, yes, there are several. Do complain about them, as someone else has said, it might work. Sometimes the in-fighting can be amusing in the morning while I drink my coffee! This is definitely not one of those "safe spaces" set up by a college, but instead real-world.
