I just purchased my first SLR camera a few days ago, a Nikon d5100. I took a video, and wonder if there is a way to convert a picture in the video to a picture that can be printed out. I have Nero MultiMedia Suite 10, Windows Live Movie Maker, QuickTime Player, IrfanView and Pinnacle Studio 14. Would any of these be able to do this? and if so, how? Thanks. Kathy

Get SnagIt software at http://www.download.com. That's CNET's protected software site. SnagIt is a screen capture tool that let you snap photos from any video just by pushing pause on the video. Depending on your video software you may have single frame advance to get just the right frame. Snag the picture and save it as a JPG. The Mac version is called Skitch.

Not to be a negative force but for your benefit and so you'll know in advance something about the outcome of what you're about to snag, I'd just like to add that there's a strong that you'll be disappointed with the results. The best video, 1080p, is shot at about 2 to 3 megapixels per frame, allowed because of what a tv does with it. I don't know for sure, but I'm thinking that your Rebel will more than likely shoot only at 720p which is going to be an even smaller megapixel image. While even 1080p is the highest quality for video it is a very low quality still image, quality that the best digital still cameras had somewhere back about 1999 or 2000. That's the downside. The upside is that if there's a really important picture in that video, a bad picture is better than no picture at all. Just thought I'd prepare you so you won't be expecting more than you're going to get.

Why not go to rapid shutter and look at the results
even on tripod the results are better and you can fade or other effects to build a story with rapid stills?

I did have the camera set for highest image quality allowed. Thank you for letting me know the quality of a picture taken from a frame in the video will likely not be the best. Kathy

gessman is correct so try still shot in rapid mode and
it's cooler to look at. (remember)("Hey, Hey" "we're" "The Monkeys" "People Say WE Monkey Around","WereTo Busy Singing
To Put Anybody DOWN")

Maybe one day someone will invent a majic show that will
mmaajjaaccaaccaalleeyy show your mind at the time you just shot a show.
How cool to think that ... you just saw, what you saw.
Work is the way and after a day of work you are tired.
But when I shoot,... I'M ALIVE and time stands still
for the moment. Then Life Begins/Again. (and again). Bv

Any decent video editing software will let you extract a frame as a still. If you shot the video in HD, the image will be okay. Don't expect to blow it up to a large picture though, we are talking small as it 3x5, maybe 4x6. Any larger than that and it will start getting seriously pixelated.

Greg, the photo of the hawk is an 8x10 and
it's not bad, if it's a photo you want to keep
for your personal use it dont have to be perfect
so go for it.photonut

They do this a school all the time, and with no special software.

Don't worry about mistakes. Many times there are those that will point them out and correct them for you. Nothing better to do I guess. Being perfect is not to be human.
