Nice work with shadows. Often not easy to do well. Great pics.

Thank-you, insman. And you can say that again about the difficulty. First real work-out with Nikon's little HDR setting in my Df. Helped quite a bit, actually. But I found out (the hard way) to not be my often lazy self when using it. Those images where I used my trusty tripod worked well. But I sure found out that I am not as "steady" as I was in my youth. Several very high contrast shots that I had high hopes for in HDR look like I need 3D glasses for them. The tones in the image look pretty good. But the "out-of-register" image drove me nuts. Live and learn, I guess.

Thanks, Karin. The area was really terrific but, I confess, I feel I left some images "in the can." Coulda done better, I think.

I think we all feel that way after a trip to Red Rock country.

We're going in mid Sept. Can we drive Monument Valley in a regular car? Should we get a guide? Can you please recommend a place to stay?

Thanks,
Bill

Most everyone who spends any time in Monument Valley stays in Moab. Pretty busy small town and somewhat expensive. There are a couple motels in the small town of Green River just off I-70 North of Moab. That's about all there is within reasonable driving distance. Yes, you can drive Monument Valley in a regular car, no problems, but if you are a bit adventurous there are countless off road options. Most popular photo spots are an easy walk from pull outs.

Stay at The View. PERIOD! That puts you right in it. My shots of The Mittens were taken from the balcony of my room.
Rent an SUV. You will want to drive the "scenic road" (I think that the Navajos believe the word "scenic" means "rough as hell"). You could take the Guided Tour, but most of the "transports" that I saw were open. I don't like eating dust.
Hope that you have a great trip.

Wow! I felt that Moab, much as I liked it, was pretty far from Monument Valley. Perfect for Arches, Canyonlands, etc, but The View really is a much better idea for John Wayne Country, IMHO.
