I got a free version of LR 3 with my new PS program, and I'm loving it. But when I go to save (export) an image, my external hard drive isn't a location option. The only way I can get it to my external HD is to "save to same folder as original." Is this normal? Or should my external HD show up as an option? If so, how do I get it to be available?

Off top of head, WAG.
Limit of free software?
In "Library" module, drive doesn't show up?
Have you tried to import and see if drive shows up?
External HD, USB? Sata? Esata?

The HD is USB. I can import from it. But it isn't an option on the export screen.

The only limit to the trial version is the number of days I can use it. Or so they say.

I have 4 but I think it is the same as 3 if memory serves correctly.

Under export location choose "Specific Folder" for Export To. Then click on the "Choose" button and navigate to your external hd. I just did it and works fine.

In the library module, left panel at bottom, is there an import button?
Go to the web and do search on software. View vidoes on importing.

I just tried it also and it works. You do need to know what the drive is named and then you can get to anything on the drive.

I just tried this - choosing the "specific folder." Only locations on my internal are listed. Neither the external HD nor the thumb drive I happen to have inserted at present are listed.

What exactly is listed. This doesn't make sense. If the computer is seeing the extra drive then LR should be seeing it.

Did you then hit the "Choose" button?

In Lightroom exporting to a hard drive is an option that you have to set up under the "Publish Services" at the bottom of the left column. It is just like setting up to publish photos to Flikr or any other service. Once it is set up you will be able to add photos and then "Publish" (or in this case export) them.

No, it is not necessary to set it up from within the "Publish Services" menu. That is a way to send pictures to a hard drive for use by a third party. For example, if you wanted to have a file of photos you have on LR that you wanted to keep synched with an iPhone or iPad. That would enable you to basically have a preset to export (publish) to that HD file. LR would update the photos if you made any further edits etc.

If LR is not seeing the external HD, then I don't think the problem is from LR. Make sure the HD is readable and writeable from windows.

I use LR and have several External HD's and never have a problem with LR writing to them.

Keep us posted!
