Wow, nearly 50% market share. WOW. From Canon Rumors.
TOKYO, March 28, 2018—Canon Inc. has announced today that the Company’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and compact-system cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 15 consecutive years1 from 2003 to 2017.

Canon develops the key components featured in its interchangeable-lens cameras—CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses—in the pursuit of “Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality, the core concept of the EOS series.” The Company effectively responds to the needs of a wide range of users through its extensive lineup of cameras catering to all levels of photography from beginner to professional and a total2 of 93 EF series interchangeable lenses.

In 2003, the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D Digital in other regions). This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. The Company has further bolstered the EOS lineup by continuing to introduce new products including accessories, interchangeable lenses and the EOS M series of compact-system cameras. During 2017, Canon introduced the EOS 6D Mark II as part of an impressive lineup of interchangeable-lens camera products3 that supported the Company’s achievement of a 15th consecutive year at the top of the global market.

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technology, combining still-image, video and network capabilities to expand and create an even stronger EOS System that meets the needs of increasingly diverse users to promote the spread of photo and video culture. What’s more, thanks to advances in imaging technology, Canon is opening up new expressive avenues, where texture, three-dimensionality and a sense of realism can be recreated in both still images and videos, to support appealing imaging experiences.

And a 120 MP camera!!!!!

Canon shows off the 120MP APS-H sensor shooting video
By Richard | March 29, 2018 | Canon DSLR News

Remember that 120MP demo camera? Apparently it’s still around. Here’s a camera with that sensor module (APS-H 120MP) shooting at 9.4fps video for advanced imagery and manufacturing applications.

Apparently 4k is over, bring on 13.2K ;)

Keep in mind that Canon’s been promising an actual camera with this for some time, however the news gets more interesting with this video. Going by normal development timelines, this camera should be ready to production if Canon decides to release it sometime later this year or next year. Outside of the Canon development announcement, no other information or leaks on release have surfaced.

You mean that rumors of Canon's imminent death are greatly exaggerated? Wow! Same for Nikon I suppose. Probably also true for Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, and Sony.

OK, so you like Canon. I use a Canon too. But I don't have a t-shirt dedicating my children's lives to the brand.

Indeed Canon sells more lenses and cameras than anyone else. Leica is top photographic gear but it is prohibitively expensive for the greatest majority of photographers.
I can only speak on my behalf and I have been using Nikon for more than 50 yeas to my entire satisfaction. I bet there are others using Pentax, Olympus and Panasonic, not to mention Sony, that will say the same.
My personal and humble opinion is that regardless of who sells more cameras and lenses each one of us should use what fits our photographic style and we are all different.
A company that has always gained my respect is Zeiss and instead I have never bought a Zeiss lens for my Nikon although I had a Sony that had Zeiss optics years ago and I still remember the excellent quality of the images it offered.
Like Leica, Zeiss also due to price has a selective market.

What you don't read behind the numbers is that the low-end interchangeable camera sales are fine, but the high-end interchangeable numbers are down, as Sony and others with full-frame and APS-C mirrorless are gaining ground and their sales are up while DSLR sales are dropping across the board. Canon knows how to promote and advertise any half-baked model they release and sell tons of them. Look at their M50, which Canon is touting as "mirrorless magic". Most reviewers (if they aren't on Canon payroll) have called this a joke in comparison with performance of mirrorless cameras from Fuji, Panasonic, Sony. But Canon has launched a great ad campaign for the M50 and they will sell tons.

On the pro level, many longtime Canon pros are jumping ship and moving to Sony mirrorless for better features and performance and price. BTW in case you think i am just some Canon hater, I was a high-end pro Canon SLR and DSLR user for 40 years ,yes 40, and switched to Sony full-frame mirrorless in January 2017, and have never looked back. I got tired of being disrespected by Canon with its half-baked, small incremental improvements that we had to wait years to get, while Nikon and Sony were giving us great top features in more of their line. I would never go back.Lots of other pros and amateurs alike are switching from Canon, especially after the price/performance of the new Sony A7III, a real game-changer and the biggest selling camera now at B&H, Adorama and Amazon.

Yes Canon and Nikon both are planning full-frame mirrorless cameras to be announced later this year or early in 2019. We will see if they can compete with other mirrorless brands in performance and price. The Canon M50 really does not. Canon will not lose their overall sales lead as many folks are so ingrained they will buy any release that Canon makes and advertises. But the reality is that Canon no longer leads in technology and innovation ,and that is starting to catch up with them globally. All their glorious pronouncements about market share won't stop the swell of change if they don't wake up. Canon has all the resources to be the best, but not the corporate will to change. Why would you change if you still outsell in overall numbers. Sony has just as much or more in resources, and they have the corporate will to lead in tech and innovation. And they don't make us wait years to put the latest tech into our hands. Nikon as a smaller camera maker knows it has to raise its tech and get it out to consumers to survive going forward. Look for great innovation and competition to increase from Fuji, Panasonic, Sony and more . Canon may be the emperor now, but the emperor has no clothes and could be dethroned if it doesn't open it eyes and see. Cheers

Just check the website sonyalpharumors.com

They list a published article almost every day from a pro who has made the switch to mirrorless, obviously always Sony.

I’ve always been a Canon guy, and still occasionally shoot with my 5D3 because I need a compatible lens. But most of the time I use the Sony A7r3 which I now love and is my first choice.

I'll be impressed when I see them more often than Nikon. Right now I see Sony about as often as I see a Pentax other than my own.

Top, award-winning pros are switching from Canon and using Sony at top events and for top publications. Sony cameras and lenses were used by pros at the Kentucky Derby ; The US Open Tennis Championships,The US Open Golf tournament, The Super bowl , and the Winter Olympics just to name a few events (look it up and learn the truth). And top photojournalists and nature photographers are switching and using Sony also. There are videos out there by top sports pros talking about why they left Canon and Nikon DSLRs and went to Sony mirrorless cameras (just do a google search) . Also more and more amateurs are also switching . And Sony's release of the A7III has more jumping into Sony from Canon. A real game-changer for price/performance. Sony introduced the A7III as their "entry level" full-frame mirrorless camera and it blows away all competition in its price range. Reviewers across the world are noting this trend of switching to Sony ,especially for Canon users because they can keep their Canon glass if they want and use MC-11 and Metabones adapters to use on Sony bodies. . Here are just a few of the pros that have switched. There are even more testimonials out there from a growing list of Canon users around the world that have switched. Many of my fellow pros in the US like myself have switched from Canon use within the past two years.

I don't want Canon to go away, competition benefit us all. But Canon has missed the boat so far and yes it is losing users in numbers for the first time in years. It still outsells by so much that Canon can still tout its sales numbers, but that is changing for sure, that is reality. Cheers

This just caught my eye on Amazon,in questions and answers about the new Sony A7III:

"This is THE camera enthusiasts like myself have been waiting for, for a long time. It represents a combination of features that are non-existent in other camera's, besides the more expensive siblings, the A7 RIII and A9 (both overkill for my needs). If you have been on the fence trying to decide between this or a Canon/Nikon DSLR, this is most definitely the way to go. I will be selling off my Canon 5Diii and lenses to get this. Price point is stellar, feature set is unmatched by other brands, and now the rest will be scrambling to play catch up. Good luck Canon and Nikon, who are both rumored to be working on their own full frame mirrorless systems. They will be years behind, especially when it comes to glass. Bravo Sony!

So why are Nikon users the only ones talking recently? Between the "Street Party" when the D850 was introduced {for the perfect camera}, and the almost daily inventory counts, I almost stopped reading here.

Oh, come on now. There are plenty of postings about other camera brands.
