I just got the Nikon D800. Would you please help me find a good macro lens. I have read good reports on the Nikkor 105 but I also noticed that this lens in made in China. Can this lens be still reliable ? Thank you.
I have the Nikkor 14-24, 24-70 and 80-200 f 2.8 .

Ugly HedgeHog has a forum dedicated to strictly macro-photography at
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html . One of the threads is all about macro equipment set-ups. Several of us use Nikkor 105-mm macro lenses, which have been considered standards of the industry for decades.

I use the Micro Nikkor AF-S 105mm f2.8 lens, and I'm not sure it can be held up as a standard anymore. It's ok, but not tack sharp (I may have a less than perfect example). It doesn't seem as good as my ancient AI 55 mm. The Tamron 90 mm or Sigma 105 may be worth a look.

Your photo of a full rose flower is a close-up, NOT a macro. That soft image can be taken just as poorly with nearly any prime lens on the market.

Your inability to properly use a macro lens is hardly a valid reason to bad-mouth the Nikkor 105-mm.
Posted within the True Macro-Photography Forum, are scores of properly focused, true macro photographs taken with both Nikkor 105D and Nikkor 105G. Many of them are mine.

So I can understand better because I love macro photography....what is the difference between a close up shot and a macro shot, if it is shot with a macro lens??

It's still a Nikkor Lens, made by Nikkor and has to meet Nikkor standards.

Have both the 105 and Nikon's 60mm. Use interchangeably depending upon the FOV I want and how close - 60mm gets closer. 105 lets me work a little farther away from the object than the 60. That all said, to my ameture eye, they are both great lenses

Calm down: I'm not bad-mouthing anything. The 105 is a good lens, it's just not the sharpest around. Thom Hogan agrees to some extent when he says "Optically, this lens did a bit less well than I expected". And thanks for your opinion on my macro technique - something you can't know anything about. I know it's a close-up, but what has that got to do with the lens' resolving power? I just don't think Nikon's quality control is as good as it once was.

If you have these lenses you can see the printing on the neck : "Made in Japan".
I presume whatever the origin of the construction, the quality of the lens should have all the qualification required by Nikon. Would you buy a D800 made in China ?

No telling how many parts in your D800 are made in china not very many things can be bought now days that do not have a connection with China. Not all things made in China are bad I have Chinese made items that have lasted much longer than the American made equivalent.

I have the 105 and the 60 macro lenses. These are great lenses. If you use a tripod when you do your shooting you will get stellar results with either of these lenses. People swear that they can hand hold a camera and do macro photography but this is a huge problem, mount your camera on a tripod and do it right.
