My son wants to buy a Nikon P-900 for our summer trip to Ireland and Scotland. The big zoom is the thing he likes about it. The question is...does anyone know if there iis a new model in the works. If so, when? Or, if there is another camera you would recommend for this trip. Thanks....

There are other options that cost more. It's anybody's guess when Nikon is coming out with a new model. If your son seen the P900 and handled it and knows how to use it, he should have a great time with it. Have a great trip.

There are many newer models of speed light than the P900. That flash was taken off the market due to overheating with numerous flashes. I have one though and love it. I have watched a Youtube video of a 900 which did over heat but only after a number of flashes that I would never use. It was not a good flash for say, a wedding photographer but for me who uses it for macro shooting it is excellent. It was also inexpensive bought used.

Don’t have the p900,
But do have the P610 (now sold with upgrades as the b700)
Think you should consider the b700, save a few bucks and should be great for anything you’d want to photo!

Forgive me everyone. No excuses just my mind telling me what I thought I was reading was not what I was reading. Thank you Kuzano for straightening me out on the matter.

Sorry,

Sure there is a new model in the works, there always is. What we do not know is when it will be ready. There is no other camera with as long zoom as the P900. I have one and think you should get one for your son. It can be very useful on a trip to Ireland and Scotland for wildlife, birds and other far away stuff.

P900 will be great for a travel camera. No changing lens, less problems with dust and wind. It is not only a very long lens, it also does well up close for nearer items. It even will do macro (as close as .5 inch!) Built in flash and every thing will fit in a very portable case. Major draw back for me is it does not do raw. I will keep looking for the next version hopefully with raw capability. If you want to photograph something a good distance away, this camera will get it. Hope you have a good trip.

P900 is a bridge camera not a flash, the flash is an SB-900.

I have one and like it a lot. It's easy on its battery and takes good shots. It is big, but in a bag it is lighter and smaller than my other Nikons or Canons with all their lenses and other kit. It is a FUN camera that is affordable.

Tell your son, "Bon Voyage" and have a great time.

Does your son understand that a bridge camera can't be put in a shirt or pants pocket, there are some smaller, flat pocket type cameras, with as high zooms of 40Xs made by Canon or Nikon. Maybe going to a camera shop & handling different kinds of high zoom cameras would be advantageous or even renting a P-900 for a day or two, to find out the personal likes & taking experimental photos before purchasing.

If your son buys the camera, I recommend that he practices focusing on the subjects at the higher zooms, AF and MF before hitting the streets. Although not necessarily pro quality photos, it beats carrying a back pack full of glass when traveling. It is nice for street shots from a distance.

I have owned this camera for several years and I love it. I travel extensively and have lovely distance and macro photographs. You don't give your son's age so the camera may be a bit too heavy for him. Extending the zoom requires steadiness or a tripod. It has many different settings and will serve him for many years.
