If the negatives are worth digitizing then they should be worth digitizing 'right', not finding the cheapest way of getting the job done - purchase a scanner!
If you have a Macro lens...go... shoot away....if not... How about purchasing a flat-bed Scanner!!

If you have a Nikon and a 40mm (DX) or 60mm (FX) you can purchase an ES-2 adapter for $ 140 that will do the job. The new D850 has some built-in features to assist with this process. Best of luck.

Your comment implies that the scanner option is better than copying the negs with a macro lens. burkphoto and others seem to be happy with the macro approach. In what way do you think the scanner is better? If better image quality, any feel for how much (a lot, minor, etc)?
This is of more than academic interest to me. I have lots of negs and slides to digitize. I have an old Minolta DiMAGE film scanner but it's not playing well with the current Windows 10. I also have an old HP flat-bed scanner with film adapter but the image quality isn't that good (and it also has software problems). So I'm interested in the macro option.

I have one but it no longer works with Windows. It uses a scsi card and the new computers do not fit the card. Not to mention the program is on floppy and of course computers no longer have floppy drives. I may have a floppy drive in a closet some place though.

Have you tried to search google or other search engines for instructions about how to use your scanner with the windows version you have? You might get lucky.
