How difficult is it to use a M42-mount lens on a Nikon camera??
{Yes, I understand that everything will be manual - I'm interested in the mechanical connection}

Adapters are available for Nikon-M42 mounts. Check with E-Bay for the selection or contact your local Photo shop.

Do all these adapters have glass?

Does the glass have much effect on IQ??

If you want infinity focus, they have to have a correction lens:

I'm wondering whether anyone knows for certain how much a particular correction lens affects IQ.

The M42 adapter I picked up for my Canon is a simple ring with no glass. Here is a link to a picture I took with it. I don't think it's too bad.

Let’s hope they chime in.
There are a few interesting Takumar m42 lenses out there I’d like to try, but I’d only be able to use them on my mirrorless Fuji without an adapter.

Do all of the adapters have glass? No. The inexpensive adapters do not. If you want glass, you must pay more. Your choice. I bought the least expensive adapters just to have the thrill of adapting the lenses to my A6000. Look for adapters with an aperture control and you will be able to use your lenses in the shutter mode.

All my M42 lenses already have aperture control. As far as I can tell, an adapter must have glass to focus at infinity on Nikon. I'm trying to find someone who can tell me with certainty what kind of IQ degradation will occur.

There seem to be a lot of Nikon users here. Certainly someone can answer this question

I have an old cheap adapter, probably Dot Line, that had a simple negative glass to allow infinity focus. IQ took a hit, but I only bought it to adapt the lens for closeups and removed the glass. The present similar Fotodiox adapter might be better. I also have a Fotodiox Pro with the 1.4X glass for Exakta to Nikon and the IQ is very good, so I think the M42 adapter should be as good.

What does the '1.4X' mean?

It acts as a 1.4X teleconverter. I don’t believe there is a light loss, but haven’t actually checked that.
