Tech wise the 5 is a better camera, ergonomics and ease of use the F4s has it all over the 5.

I would actually prefer evenan F3 over the 5.

My $0.03. YMMV.

How long have you owned your F5?

I have the opportunity to purchase either an F4S or an F5 in "excellent" condition from a reputable dealer for roughly the same price. I have owned several F4S's and love them, especially the ability to use the older lenses with ears (although I have had only AI and AIS lenses for years). I also like that all the controls are manual. The F5 is electronic, has the extended trip and advanced metering, but will it handle AI lenses and what restrictions would that entail? FPS is not an issue, nor is weight. Interchangeable screens is; I like an E (grid) screen and would like to be able to find a BriteScreen. Of course, these will have to be added, as the cameras will probably come with B screens. I also have a concern about battery life. Any comments from members who have used either or (ideally) both cameras would be most welcome. Thank you, but I am not interested in the F6 at this time (outrageous prices), nor am I interested in other cameras or formats; no replies about Canon, Pentax, 4/3, mirrorless, digital, etc., please. Thank you for your assistance.

I have a F5 (with the data back) and use it along side my D810. I love using it and all of my lenses work well with it. AI-s, AF-D and AFS. The F5 feels about the same as the D810 with battery grip on it. Choose your film wisely for the conditions and subject matter.

F5 is great, but try the F6.

I prefer the F100 and N90s over the others mentioned above.

The (Nikon) F4S has a battery pack that takes AA batteries and seems like they last forever. I would recommend removing them while not in use so they don't leak into the camera.

I use rechargeable Eneloops AA’s in my F100 & N90s. Last a long time, no leakage.

The exceed 4 processor vs. the 5 processor. Both will take most Nikon lenses that have been manufactured. The info you need can be found at nikonusa.com. They also list a number you can call and get the CORRECT information that you seek. Personally I do not believe their is much difference between the two cameras. You can currently get a D4s Mint at a very good price off ebay.

Do you have any clue at all what this thread is about? Because your post shows that you clearly do NOT!

You can probably get a Sony or even change over to Canon .... all of which have ZERO to do with questions about two specific Nikon film cameras.

This one seems to be attracting a peculiar quality of contributions ...

I bought the F4 in 1988, upgrading to the F4S a couple years later. I bought the F5 when it came out in 1997 and STILL use it. Its likely the best 35mm SLR ever built! Grab it and never look back!

The Nikon F6 beats it hands down.

I don't own an F6 but I don't want an F6. I much rather use my F5. The F6 doesn't have the interchangeable finder like the 5 F's before it.

Its all a matter of opinion. No interchangeable viewfinder and those rediculous CR123A batteries, I had never even considered it for a body at any time in my career, and never will.
