I agree with you, but wouldn't it be nice to see maybe a small histogram in the top right (maybe translucent) of the view finder with your settings which are shown at the bottom of the viewfinder prior to taking the shot. All we see is the settings and a scale showing over/under/or correct exposed, and we know if we are shooting birds flying against the sky we have to use the EV and adjust to compensate for the sky. If prior to taking the shot you could see a histogram and if you are not happy with the histogram value for dark/mid tone/highlight you could make changes aperture/shutter speed/ISO on the fly. I shoot in manual mode, but I do chimp quite often to see what I am getting. With knowledge not only of your camera, but also shooting conditions you can live without a histogram preview, but I still think it would be a nice optional feature.

Bruce, if you scientifically test your camera and determine where its upper limits are you can then use that knowledge to determine your exposure. 98% of my photographs are done in manual mode. I know my camera and its limits. I place the bright values appropriately and never chimp. I know what adjustments I'll make in PS prior to even pressing the shutter release. I'd suggest working with your camera so you know its limits and how minor adjustments affect the captured image file. Once you are conversant with your camera's capabilities, you'll see an improvement in your photographs.

The situation is that it takes a bit of effort and work. Don't take shortcuts.
