For all those Nikon users who own a 200-500 lens. This is a very large and heavy lens. I wonder how you guys bring this thing around. Do you keep in on a separate body and pack it in a separate case to lug around? Or do you pack it with your camera bag with the rest of your gear? Because of its size, finding a bag large enough to carry everything, but small enough to take on as a carry-on during my travels would be a real challenge. Any suggestions?

The big issue with the 200-500 is the lens hood. I remove the lens hood for travel, along with all of my other lens hoods, and stack the lens hoods together into one compartment in my bag. Teleconverters or other gear can fit inside the stacked hoods. The other lenses then fit just fine into available slots in the bag. Lenses are never mounted on camera for travel; they don't fit efficiently in the bag, and you risk damage to the lens mount if you accidentally drop the bag.

I use a LowePro Trekker AW bag, which will hold the 200-500, 70-200/2.8, 24-120/4, 16-80DX/2.8-4, TC-14, TC-17, D750, D500. The 200-500 goes into the center channel along with the stacked lens hoods (with a padded divider between), 70-200 and 24-120 on one side, bodies and 16-80 on the other side.

Whatever other camera gear I bring goes into checked baggage (tripod, ball head, gimbal head, flash, filters) with most clothes. My other carryon (for under seat) is computer/electronics gear, medicines, and a few clothes. If going somewhere cold, my coat/hat/gloves goes with me as well (can be stuffed into overhead with camera gear).

When I pack my lenses I invert the hoods. That keeps the lens smaller and prevents the hood from being damaged.
