No kidding. I don't offer advice anywhere but in the public forums, for it allows the constructive back and forth that makes UHH special. That being said, there are a substantial number of thin skinned members who feel their picture of the Cat or birds make them the next Dianne Arbus or Ansel Adams reincarnated who take comments as an insult. I shrug, let it slide off and figure they'll grow up and realize that well intended criticism is just that.

I think it's important to recognize that UHH's Photo Gallery and many of the specialty forums are primarily used as social sharing sites and that the posters are not interested in a learning/teaching experience. While I have on occasion offered unsolicited suggestions, I can't blame an OP for rejecting me if they did not specifically ask for feedback.

In a similar topic here there are some points made about how praising poor work prevents an OP from getting better - and perhaps (I inferred) prevents the "lurking" novice photographers from learning also. I am suggesting that there are many dozens, if not hundreds, of UHH users who are just sharing for fun. I can understand where some of the most experienced and talented on this site (no, I'm not part of that cream ) could grow frustrated, but complaining about casual snapshots posted by folks who enjoy the hobby of photography doesn't really help anyone.

Agree! That's why I referenced the other sections designed for critiques. To me, Gallery is for sharing.

I agree. The guidelines for the photo gallery say you may ask for a general critique. To me that indicates that someone who does not ask may not want a critique . My signature says, say what you want about my photos. If I agree I let them know, if not I don't say anything. I always considered the Gallery to be a social sharing section.

Of course, wherever the critiques are given they can be less than helpful. Sharpshooter addresses a couple of reasons here. Most of us UHH amateurs tend to give feedback based on our own likes/dislikes, which may have nothing to do with what the OP was hoping to achieve. I like rgrenaderphoto's description of "constructive back and forth." Respectful conversations can be rich with learning and inspiration on several levels.

Appreciated, R. I have always been comfortable being in what I perceive as the middle of the pack here I have learned a lot, and on occasion can help or inspire others too.

My point is the Photo Gallery was developed for showing pics and critique could be asked for.

"Photo Gallery
Show off your pics and/or ask for general critique."

I have a related question. What happens when someone gets suspended or banned from UHH? Are they the same thing? If not what does a suspension mean and how long does it last?

We all have differences of opinion, and also different ways of dealing with them. Some people get downright nasty and offensive, demeaning, or insulting. Others become snarky or sarcastic. Some just go quiet and don't respond.

So what does a UHH suspension actually involve?

Ya know, sometimes it's just not worth the effort of trying to offer some folks suggestions to improve their photographic efforts. I have a fair amount of studio lighting experience with products and when I noticed a UHHer making an effort to photograph watches in a studio setting, I attempted to offer some suggestions and examples of how he might improve his efforts via PM. Should've known better (with this particular individual) as I was shut down because his ego just couldn't accept what I was offering. I am now on his ignore list and it's a dam shame.....just saying.

I do 99% of my communicating via PMs and most often it's an open and honest discussion involving exchanges of ideas. Most UHHers have an open mind about learning new things. Thank goodness only a very few don't and I should have known better in this circumstance.... However, the effort continues....

In reading through this thread again, I noticed it is entirely about abuses of the "ignore" feature - nothing about good use of it .... primarily sidelining someone to keep him/her from pushing a thread off course and right into the Attic.

It is OK to make someone's ignore list. They just limit what can be offered to them and what is learned by them. That really kind of funny if you think about it; one joins a forum to learn and then limits what they can learn!

But there are a few who are not here to offer any help.

I only offer advice or assistance when it is requested by the poster, otherwise I simply shake my head and move on. Not everyone wants to improve so I don't bother giving advice where it is not requested.

Good attitude. Watches are difficult to shoot. I used to shoot some, and an older guy once showed me (in a magazine ad) that it took 7 separate shots of a watch to get it right. Patience, patience, patience...
