If you're ever in the Durango Colorado area, you must take the Durango-Silverton RR, either summer or winter. We did the trip in winter, our preference, and although it doesn't go all the way to Silverton in the winter time, it was 'Maaaavalous, simply Maaaaavalous'. Yes its a coal burner and there is soot & cinders but its well worth the trip. This was done in February and as you can see it was an absolutely beautiful day.

That area of the state is in a drought. 55% snow pack is not good. The route to Silverton is usually closed in winter due to drifts and avalanches. If you ride in one of the open cars you will get soot and cinders on you. The scenery is very special. Glad you had an enjoyable trip.

Still? We had a great trip and the soot & cinders are part of an authentic coal burning steam engine. However we chose the enclosed car since it was still chilly but spent a lot of time in the vestibule.

You simply can't get up to Silverton in the winter. Too much snow
