Any thoughts about matching my D7200 with an eight inch Celestron orange tube Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope? I found the clean telescope with original fork and motor drive for $25 at a thrift store. I do not have a heavy duty tripod and wedge. The mirror looks good.

Hello fellow Biologist/Artist. Oh, nice name, "Les Brown". The name of a big band leader from my parents generation; "Les Brown and His Band of Renown". This is intended to be a compliment.

you'l want the tripod and wedge to do astrophotography I'd also suggest the Vixen 2" Flip Mirror Diagonal, it helps to locate and frame your target

Hi, Lamiceae. Not many these days remember "The Band of Renown." I got razzed about that for many years, but not so much now. I think he joined the angel band about ten or so years ago. You say, fellow biologist and artist. Sounds like we traveled similar paths. I'm retired, enjoying my 2D art, pottery, photography and a bit of writing while I still can. Thinking of getting the telescope functional, as if I had time for another hobby.

Thanks, Rob. I'll look into that. I have a fixed mirror right angle and a T-mount.

I saw the Les Brown Band play at Disneyland in Anahiem, CA sometimes in the 80's. I kept thinking, "it's a gig."

WOW! You got an outstanding deal. You can buy the T adaptor for your Nikon from B&H but your camera might be a little heavy for the motor drive to stay locked on. Problem I had with a D300s. You need to go onto the Astronomy section here on the UHH. Good luck have fun. You can also down load the manual for free. How far are you from Connecticut I have a tripod that will take over 45 pounds you can have.

Try looking at "Cloudy Nights", a forum dedicated to astronomy and free to join. Lots of nice people on there, a good forum to be a member of if you find yourself enjoying Astronomy. Taking pics of solar objects like the moon, and planets should be fine, even if your scope mount is not finely tuned. And proper Celestron tripods for that scope, with a larger top plate, bracing, and properly spaced mounting holes are often found used in that forums: "for sale" section. But you will not likely find anything for $25. You got an unbelievable deal on that scope! I think a used Celestron tripod, sized for an 8 inch scope like yours, some even with a wedge, will run about $100-150. Keep in mind that astronomy is a lot like photography, expensive to upgrade. Enjoy the hobby, it is a blast. My first scope was an 8inch Meade. The whole system, used, ran me $1300 if I recall. But money well spent. Now if I can only stop with my 16 inch scope?

Well count me in to the "old as dirt" group because as soon as I saw "Les Brown" I said "and his Band Of Renown" and again this is a compliment.

Ahh. "Sentimental Journey". I too remember my parents listening to it. Anybody for some "Ella Fitzgerald" tunes. Just my 2 cents.

I did that with my Nikon D200 and a 1000mm Celestron scope. Celestron sells a Nikon adapter that replaces the eyepiece. After that you need a steady tripod and a wedge and you're in business.
