Do some research. There are thousands of informative articles out there.

Your camera choice will not require you to upgrade from LR6 to subscription. Before spending the money, it may be worth deciding specifically what you are looking for in a camera and then compare each camera's specifications. They are both incredibly capable cameras, you just need to decide if you need the extras with the D850. Good luck!

Sorry, unintended response.

Although you'll be fine with Lightroom, you may find that you'll want to upgrade some of your lenses. I own an 810 and it does have a setting for using DX lenses so there is a workaround.
The 810 is certainly the best camera I've ever owned. As to the 850, I understand that it's better for astrophotography but that's something I never do anyway.

I agree completing on software vs camera. But, it is important to note LR6 does support the D850 assuming you've applied all the available updates through Dec-2017 and your stand-alone software now reports v6.14. Adobe added D850 RAW support in their 6.13 update.

Maybe I could have been clearer, but I was assuming he has all the updates to the LR6, thus making it compatible with the D850.

I'd never let one software program keep me from buying a camera. There are loads of great processing programs out there, many of them free, and most of them are less expensive than Adobe's products.

Welcome to UHH. The below link tells you the difference. If money is no object, go with the D850. The D810 is a great camera. I use a D810 with LR6 licensed version.Have fun whatever you decide.

Your decision will not be dependent on LR. I am using the non-cloud LR6. I have a D810 (which is the best camera I have ever owned) and upgraded from D700/D300s. I had only pro quality FX glass that I was using on both both bodies. You will find that the D810 demands really good glass to resolve top quality images on the 36mp sensor. I have heard that the D850 requires even better glass such as the new lenses with fluorite elements. The D850 is a major upgrade to the D810 and I may consider getting one when the camera I'm using is the only thing holding me back from creating superior images.

There are other quality software products that don't require a subscription. I downloaded an NEF from FroKnows.com last night and confirmed the upgrade will read D850 raw files with no issues.

You need to do some analysis and decide what features suit you best. As just one example...if noise is a major consideration the D810 has less noise than the 850 and the D750 has less even still...megapixels has its advantages and also disadvantages. Don't think that just switching to the latest camera alone is going to improve your photography. The reviews focus on the positive and gloss over the negatives. Its all about sales, not what is best for you.

You might just be better off sticking to what you have and learn to use it to the fullest capability.

I own a D810 and have almost worn it out in the last 2 years. I love it. I have recently used a D850 for 13 days in the Arctic and had the D810 alongside. Using them side by side is the best method to compare them. It is not even close. I am getting a new D850. It is remarkably faster focusing. It has more and better technology. Just read the reviews. The difference in cost notwithstanding the D850 is superior far in excess of the extra cost.

As good as the D810 is, get the current model, which is the D850. It will hold its value longer. I don't think that you will see any difference in the picture quality unless you own some really high end lenses. None of my current lenses challenge my D810. As for LR 6, there is another post today where it is said that the latest verson/upgrade is compatible with the D850.

What you will get with the D850 versus the D810 is better autofocus and frame rates in continuous shooting. Also, the 20 megapixels you get if you attach a DX lens is viable, as much as some DX cameras.
