Aspen tress in the Fall

Would like to see and photograph Aspen trees this Fall probably around Aspen Colorado. Thinking the 3rd/4th week of September might be good and Aspen doesn't have to be the only place. Thanks for your thoughts.

Even those Coloradans in other parts of their state trek to the Southwestern part to see the best color. Hwy. 550 from Durango to Ouray, a.k.a. the "million dollar hwy." affords dramatic views. We've seen the Aspen many times starting the last 2 weeks of Sept. to the 1st week of Oct. We even had to extend our 2-week trip by a few days that had started mid September just to see their "coming out" or as some might say, their falling out. Enjoy!

Great choice for fall colors. Timing depends on the moisture and temperatures but the 3rd week could be a little early. One of the most photographed places in the country is from Maroon Lake with the two peaks of Maroon Bells in the background. This is just outside of Aspen. The sunrise is especially wonderful but you need to get there an hour or more before so you can get a spot along the shoreline. It is a beautiful hike from Maroon Lake up to Buckskin Pass as you are surrounded by peaks over 14,000 feet and the scenery is stunning. This photo was from a few years ago about October 1st...

Thank you both. Great tips. We'll make time to do sort of a circle from Denver/Durango/Aspen/Denver. Probably wait until 4th week of Sept.

I don't know if you are close to Colorado or are flexible but as the aspens start to change there are web sites that tell you the progression of the color changes at spots around the state. You can search the web for those. Some of the local Denver TV stations have info on their web sites also.

We'll be coming from Maryland by air so not unlimited flexibility but I do appreciate the heads up about web sites and color predictions. They do the same here for cherry blossoms and I'll wait to get some sense of timing before comitting to airlines. Thanks again.

Hi -

We’ll be in Aspen 9/24, Grand Mesa 9/25 then on to Utah and Arizona for a couple of weeks. Are 10/09 and 10/10 too late for Route 550?

Thanks.

I second the Maroon Bells. Fantastic place.
