I am trying to plan a safari for next winter ( living in the North East of the USA I like to get away from the cold in the winter).and have a couple of issues/questions. First is that I would like to choose a company that is geared to the needs of photographers. I generally travel with a company that feels that experiencing the culture of an area is the number one important aspect of the trip. I like that but this time I really want photo opportunities as my number one priority. My second concern is perhaps the most important one. I use a CPAP machine that I can not do with out. So here is my two part question. Are there any photo based safaris that also use facilities with electricity available all night long and if not how long is the period of electricity shut off.(my machine has batteries that can coast through up to six hours if they can be recharged daily). Thanks for any help or advice you can provider

I think a Google search or get in touch with travel companies that arrange your type of trip would be a better source of information. Good luck with that.

I was in Kenya in the middle ages, back in 1984. At the time going with one of the "bignames" was beyond our financial capabilities, so we used a local facility found in a NY Times ad. Wherever we went, whatever park we visited, wherever we spent the night (always with electricity-220v), the big name tour vans were parked alongside of ours. Those tourists spent close to triple what we did.
That's just in case you're interested.
You did not say what country, but I would hazard not Kenya, with it's current problems.
BTW, I went with 40 rolls of 36 exposure Kodachrome, and ran out two days before we left. I had to buy two very expensive rolls.
Also btw, our native Kenyan guide was fluent in his tribal language (Kikuyu), Swahili, English, French, and German.
Shoot your digital heart out and enjoy. It might just be your best vacation ever.

I traveled with Greg Sweeney this past September, and the trip was awesome. It was a reasonably-priced safari in South Africa just for photographers (non-photographers were welcome to come, but the "focus" was on taking photos! At every place we stayed the rooms had electricity. The vehicles never had more than two passengers per row of seats. We all had a great time and came home with great stories and photos. We saw all of the famous big game animals.

Check out Gerry van der Walt - he just gave a talk at the Sierra Club Photo Club last Wednesday, and I would book a trip with him any time. And he is quite a good photographer as well.

If you don't need a professional photographer, just a really good guide to be in the right place at the right time and flexible booking to be in lodging that has electricity at all times, then I'd suggest Safari Sasa, in Tanzania. We did a trip with them and the guide was super at finding the animals, as well as knowledgeable about plant life, local culture, etc. You can find them on TripAdvisor or Facebook.

I HIGHLY recommend Natural Habitat out of Boulder CO. I just got back from Botswana last September. It was the 6th trip to Africa and was by far the best tour company. Also Google Boyd Norton out of Colorado, he does fantastic trips to Tanzania. Good luck. You can't go wrong with either one.

I was in Africa last summer with a company called Pangolin Photo tours owned and operated totally by photographers. Everything about this trip was amazing and of the utmost geared towards photography and we felt the price was reasonable. They worked with us to set up an itinerary that included all we wanted to do and see and we ended up staying 3 weeks. It was awesome

Check out a cruise by Oceania that rounds the tip of South Africa and hits Kenya and Tanzania. You will be able to sleep on the cruise ship each night with regular electrical supply. Day trips to animal sanctuaries are available at most stops.

We did South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana with Ntaba African Safaris. They are based in Kentucky, not sure of the city. It was an amazing trip, got fantastic photographs. One thing you might consider. I asked our guide in Kruger National Park what the best time of year is to travel to South Africa. We were there in early October. He recommended mid September to late October because that is their spring season and leaves are not covering all the trees making it easier to see and photograph the animals. I never would have considered that but hope the information helps you. Have a wonderful trip whenever you go.

Joe VanOs Photo Safaris has been around about 30 years. Have done multiple photo trips with them, including Kenya.
Pull up their website and sent them an email or give them a call.
They are reliable and will give you an honest answer on what they can or cannot do.
You also have the expertise of a large organization with history should you have medical issues needing attention.
PM me if you have additional questions.

Highly recommend.

My wife and I also travelled with Pangolin Photo Tours. Their guide/photographer, Charl Stols is awesome and I’d try to spend time with him. Not only expert at going to the places where you’re more likely to sight the wildlife, but also full of tips for even very experienced photographers. Bear in mind that they do not go to places where the wildlife are in semi-captivity so if you don’t see big game, its because they don’t have email. We also spent two days in South Africa on the Cape Peninsula with Liza de Villiers of CapeTown Photo Tours, a Pangolin affiliate who was also amazing and kept Sharon and I on a strict itinerary to shoot everything on the list.

Charl and Liza were our guides too, I can't say enough good about them!
Besides the 3 day houseboat with Charl we did a 9 night tent safari with Earth Ark. Pangolin arranged this for us and that company was fantastic getting us where we needed to be for great shots.
