RAW Switch - is it better to have it on the outside of the camera, or do you prefer it layered into the menus?

If it's a switch, it would have to be on the outside.

Once I set it, it usually never changes. It would be a waste for me as a switch on the outside.

Camera engineers have to make that decision based on what they think the majority of their camera users would need. You can't put an adjustment for EVERYTHING on the outside of the camera.

Having said that, all my Nikon digital cameras had the ability to change mode from jpg to raw using a button and a knob (which I would interpret as outside) OR using a menu selection (inside). Once I set it to raw it rarely gets changed.

No, you can't - can you, Dirt?

It just seems to me - a RAW switch on the outside (lever or button) is just one of those many things, it'd be more logical to have on the outside ....

And, the simpler it is, to implement - the better ....

I guess, Winslowe ... a button, or a lever ... would probably be best, huh?

Really, Bill?

You never change it to JPGs, huh?

Most DSLRs feature a RAW setting in the menu system.

Some, like the Pentax K-50 (shown in the avatar) have a button on the outside of the camera.

I prefer this arrangement, as I quite often make the change, back and forth ...

You sound like you didn't know the setting was in the menus, on most DSLRs, Winslowe ....

I have a camera with two flash memory cards (Nikon D800). Since Nikon gives me the option of independently choosing how each card is used, an external switch does not make sense. Also, I always shoot in raw.

Yes, Bart ... I have two Nikons, which employ Dual Cards - the D7000 and the D7100 ... and yes - they can both be set up that way, in the menus ...

But, cameras w/o that kind of arrangement, are probably better served by the exterior button ... (can be seen in the avatar, here)

You asked about a RAW button/switch...

I store RAW+JPEG.
If I know I'll want a crap-load of fast successive shots, I'll temporarily turn RAW off.

But, isn't it easier to do that, Bill ... with an exterior switch?

Chris, yes it would be easier which is exactly why I would not want an exterior switch. I don’t want to accidentally switch off of raw and end up with a days worth of jpegs. I have enough trouble keeping the focus selector on the correct sensor as an example. Granted I am a beginner using a Nikon D3100.

What they say is true, right enough!
