Hi,
I read UHH every day and like the forum and some of the suggestions. I am an amateur photographer using a Canon T4i and usually a Tamron 18-270 lens. I might upgrade sometime to the new Tamron 18-400 lens but we'll see.
Right now I would like to get suggestions about metal/aluminum/acrylic prints. Acrylic is more expensive and I think I will get a good pic for what I want from metal/aluminum.
This is a beautiful sunset pic I took a few weeks ago and it just came out so great I have to print and display it.

This will be for personal use and will be hung in my house. Will probably do a 16x20 or something reasonable in size. i would like to stay under $100 but don't have to.

Anyway, who do you use for metal prints? Any problems to watch out for? Any other suggestions?

thanks,
Mike

Mike, I've dabbled with printing on metal. The only advice I can offer from experience is that some images are wonderfully suited for metal printing. Others will leave you severely disappointed. I can recommend my personal printing shop. Tempe Imaging Center. They are part of Tempe Camera ( http://www.tempecamera.biz )

I use Artmill printing co. Artmill.com Their metal prints are metal paper mounted on a floating mount with a dull finish. None of their metal prints are glossy. You would have to go acrylic to get glossy.

Dennis Goodman does all my prints, I have never had one done on metal but he has that capability.

A recent thread here: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-513455-1.html
I used Nations Photo Lab for a big project at work last year.
They are great to deal with.

Maybe not from Artmill but the aluminum prints I got from Nations Photo Lab are super glossy, and the color and contrast was better than the acrylic.

I've used Bay Photo and Mpix. For someone starting out, the Bay ROES application can be as confusing AF. Mpix's was more straightforward.

Just weeks ago I had my first METAL PRINT done at Sam's Club - high gloss. I am blown out of the water how fantastic it is. Doubt I will do any more canvas prints. LOVE IT!!

I've been using Costco for all my prints, they're metal is as good as any I have compared it against. A 16 x 20 would run $53.99 and a Costco membership is required. As an FYI, when you post a photo, click on the (store original) box for a better presentation.

If the image is worth saving or selling, Bay Photo is probably the best out there, but they are on the west coast, the crate is expensive, and Fed Ex charges are expensive from CA. MPIX does a good job for far less money in standard sizes like 16 x 20 in the $50 price range. If you have odd ball custom pano sizes, Bay Photo is the choice.

I have been using Bay Photo, but they have recently limited some of their capabilities while expanding others. Metal has been great, but I just got my first Acrylic print and am in love, all over again. Still, I am trying White House Custom Colour (WHCC) and am very, very impressed.

Having tried Bay and MPIX, I use a small lab in northern California called Laserlight - http://laserlightprints.com - their aluminum print product is superior to the others; evidently they just use higher quality base stock.

That said, I also sampled a print from Canvasonsale.com - but what they called a metal print was not at all the same thing as the others. When you hear about the superiority of the metal print, it is regarding a final product that is a sheet of aluminum coated with a special material that acts as a substrate for a dye sublimation print process. What Canvasonsale shipped was, instead, no more than a paper print adhered to a metal base - nothing remotely like the look of dye sub on aluminum.

My point is that apparently at least one lab touts "metal print" but does not actually deliver the kind of product that is normally regarded as such - that is, the dye-sub-on-aluminum-base type of print that the other labs I've used make. So beware.
