The AR-15 is getting a bulk of the blame for the mass shooting in Parkland, FL. It HAS come to my attention, however, that M1 carbines, the rifle that won WWII, Korea, and also used in Vietnam, was sold surplus after WWII. The last big sale of these guns came in 1963 when 240,000 of them were sold for $20. These are semi-automatic rifles that are just as lethal as the AR-15. Despite the large number of unregistered powerful semi-automatic carbines in the hands of American citizens sixty-five years and more ago, we did not have the mass shootings in schools and elsewhere that we are seeing today. So....having shown that powerful semi-automatic guns existed during an era in our past their owners did not feel compelled to mow down defenseless individuals, the problem must lie elsewhere.

The one shocking exception was Charles Whitman at the Texas Tower.

See #5 Notice it was the "last" big sale of M1's.

But, for some reason, they are focused on the AR. According to the misinformed (ignorant) media, painting a rifle black makes it an assault rifle and adding a bump stock converts it to a full auto.
I think the problem is the politically correct society that we have let take over common sense.

Correct, it's not the tool it is the mentality of our social structure that has changed. Could be the younger generations have a couple of screws loose.

One other interesting statistic is that more people are killed with knives than rifles. I've not seen a big political movement to ban knives.

Years ago, I was a member of an R.O.T.C. rifle team. This included both honor guard and, for some of us, marksmanship. We actually used unmodified M1 Garand rifles with open sights. During training, we could put 9 out of 10 rounds in the bull within one minute. The interesting thing is that I never saw any of the rifles, in all that time, take it upon itself to shoot anything. There needed to be a person controlling that weapon.

So, along with you very aptly pointing out a fact, what has happened that has caused this type of violence in our society?

Crap, I have an automatic rachet in my tool chest and hadn't realized it. Do I need a license for that?

Are you the resident " expert " ? His point was the mind set of the people and the times represented not the tool in question.

I am pointing out, dirt, that semi-automatic weapons (the M-1 Garand in particular) have been owned in large quantites by Americans for years. The AR-15 is just the new kid on the block. While pistols with large magazine capacities might not have been available back then, the basic premise is that there was as much lethality in the hands of Americans 65 years ago as there is today. What's changed? People.

I'm beginning to think that it's people who can't control themselves like they use to be able to. As long as you're talking about control.
