How should I store my DSLR lenses? I live in Chicago where high humidity isn't really an issue.

I keep mine in a camera bag, with a couple of those silica dry packs.

I have my unused lenses in foam tube pouches on a shelf in the closet.

Like Jerry, I keep mine in the camera bag or in separate lens pouches (depending on what I'm shooting and what I'm likely to need on the shoot). I keep a dry pouch in each lens container and have a dry pouch in each storage container/pocket on my camera bag. I've been shooting in Oklahoma (dry to humid and temps from -20 to 115), New Haven Connecticut moderate humidity and temps from -20 or so to 80ish) Philadelphia ( moderate humidity and temps from -10 to 80ish and Clearwater Florida (moderate to high humidity and temps from 32 to 100). So far, no deterioration, lens fungus, or other issues. But, I wipe down and clean my lenses regularly and use lens cleaner and lens cloths often. Also, my silica gel packs get changed weekly and more often if necessary (unusual humidity like when we had Hurricane Irma coming through Florida and finally hitting here. It was extremely hot and muggy for the few days prior to the hurricane hitting and for the day or so after it passed through. And, we didn't have any power for a week or so after the hurricane, so no air conditioning, no refrigerators and no power.
This is a link for silica-gel. I don't advocate this brand as I don't think I've tried it but the article is good and to the point on photography.

Store the lenses vertically with the lens mount end up. Also put a silica pack in the container.

If there is no high humidity your only protection of the lenses will be against dust.
Here in South Florida humidity is high, especially during the summer months. I keep my cameras and lenses in boxes with a desiccant that I change periodically. I also get my gear out from time to time to expose it to light then I clean them and put them back in the boxes.

How often do you find you have to reactivate the dry packs?
