I have been struggling to get to grips with Serif X5 for several months, but was recently given some books describing using Elements 9 &10. Is there a lot of difference between them, and if so which is the better?

I can understand your struggle with Serif X5. This is not a simple program to use but it has some clever elements. (Sorry I could not resist that pun.) Elements 10 is ideal if you don't need all the stuff in Photoshop. There are plenty of tutorials online. I would choose Elements 10, but be prepared for plenty of study and practice if you want to be proficient. I was a fan of Serif programs for years but with their X range they seem to get more complicated for no good reason. I tried Elements in a couple of versions but eventually returned to an old favourite of mine Ulead Photo Impact 12. Sadly, this program is no longer available.

Depends on what you want to use them for. I have X3 version which I use for desktop publishing, at which it shines! Not so much at photo editing but I suspect you have the photo version is likely better but probably not the levels of control you have with a true photo editing program. If I'm doing a book or catalog for someone, I do the editing then use serif for publishiing.

Thanks Jadeast and Shakey, I also found Serif Photoplus X5 quite confusing and complicated. The user manual and resource guide are not too much help, they tell me everything except what I want to find, and I have found that the tutorials on You Tube much better but rather limited.I am a member of our local camera Club where everyone uses either Elements10 or Photoshop CS5, and am wondering whether to go the Elements route or stick with Serif and hope for the best. For VERY basic editing I use Picassa, but miss not having a curves tool.

Thanks Jadeast and Shakey, I also found Serif Pho... (show quote)

Hi TonyB, If you want a step up from Picassa try Windows Live Photo Gallery. It's free and has a whole bunch of neat tools. The 'Fine Tune' tool-set is a wonder to behold. Post processing opens a whole new world for what were mundane photos. Just Google 'Windows Live Photo Gallery' and you'll find a download. Good luck.

Check out Faststone image viewer or photoscape! Both are freebies and do an excellent job. Both have some great apps but they take some exploring to find them all.

Thanks again guys, I have just managed to convert a normal pic of my great granddaughter to a cropped feather edged oval on a white background using Serif and watching the photoshop elements tutorial on YouTube, so it seems that the two are fairly similar, just some of the names are different as is the layout. Oh well, we live and (hopefully) learn. As I cant post it on here I will send it to the Gallery for comment.

Well done, TonyB. I'll have to try that trick myself. We live and learn together.
