I need some help. I have a cannon EOS Rebel SL1. I have read several articles on this but can not figure out just how to set my camera up. I have gone through menu but still can't find what I'm
looking for. I am new to these DSLR cameras. I have always used 35mm slr's with all manual controls so any info will be appreciated.

C. Fn IV
C. Fn-6 Shutter/AE Lock button

1. AE lock/AF

Page 303 of your manual, the setting you make here separates the focus from the shutter button to the * button on the back of the camera and the metering will be done when pressing the shutter button.

It only works in manual, Av, Tv, in auto mode the camera switches back to both functions on the shutter button.

Found this on the web:

Menu > 4th wrench > Custom functions > Shutter/AE lock button
That menu option may not be available on all settings.

and, on the YouTubes:

UHH is supposed to be a community where Photographers of all skill sets and ability can engage in a free form sharing of ideas. Apparently, IDguy is not clear on the concept.

A simple google search using the key words "back button focus sl1" brought me to a page that you should find useful.

https://www.p4pictures.com/2014/08/how-to-setup-back-button-focus/

You essentially have to unlink focus/shutter from one another and reassign the focus function to the button marked in the illustration below.

Reassigning can be found here -> | Menu > 4th wrench > Custom functions > Shutter/AE lock button |

Try this for an explanation of how to set it up on a Canon. I'm not sure if this applies to the SL1 series, but I understand they are similar to the T5i.

I'm glad you found a solution. I had the time and interest to offer a solution, but I'm not familiar with your camera, so I let the people with knowledge reply.

I don't know, however. you tube probably has the answer. Just ask the following question--how do I set up backbutton focus on the Canon SL1

Try reading your camera manual.

Others have mentioned this, but youtube offers many tutorials in an easily searched site, including this:
