I am getting a sony a57 Friday and the sales person told me i needed a high speed card to keep up with the camera is that correct (he was talking about the 12fps) any info greatfully received.

I would look at the manual and see what it tells you is the recommended speed of a card for the camera. I would go by what the manual says and not the sales person. He could be right or he could be trying to get more commission off of you. Following the manual is always the best bet.

Look in the manual, it will detail for you exactly what size, speed and type of card you will need. It will also tell you exactly WHICH cards have been factory tested for compatibility. Not all cards are created equal, stay away from off brand cards and cheap deals.

Will there be a card already installed in the camera when i buy it? I have checked my cards for my sony alpha a200 and they are 8g(40x) 4g(80x) 1g(120x) so now i have more idea than when I started.

I would make the sale person read the manual. :) That way he can supply you with one right then. And you can start shooting when you get home after you get the battery charged. :) And he might learn something too.

I have the older Sony SLT 55 which was replaced by your SLT57. I have used cards numbered 4 through 6. If you are doing video then a higher numbered card might be necessary, however, I shot video while in Africa with a number 4 card with no problems.

The lower numbered cards will be less expensive, maybe, get a couple lower numbered cards and start taking pictures.......have fun

I have a new a57 and use a SanDisk Extreme HD video 16gb class 10 rated at 30MB's per second purchased from Adorama that works fine.
I did a google search and found some on Amazon for 24.95 with a card reader. The description says 30MB/s but the picture shows a card with 45MS/s which doesn't compute. Went to Adorama and searched for SanDisk Extreme SD cards and they have a set of two 45MB/s cards for 39.95.

A class 10 card will do just fine. If you have a Microcenter near you, you can pick up a 16 gig card for under $10.00 with a lifetime warranty. Look them up on the internet. They ship also.

It means that light is allowed to pass through to the sensor at all times therefore eliminating a mechanical mirror and allowing for faster frame rates. Go to the Sony site and it is explained a lot better.

It means that the mirror is a pellicle (2 way) mirror, and doesn't move during exposure. Light passes through the mirror to the imaging chip and is also reflected up into the viewfinder sensor(in the case of Sony SLT cameras). This feature allows the camera to operate more quickly(Higher frame rate), and creates less internal vibration. Hope that helps.

Sony support will tell you what is the write speed of your camera and then you can get a card to match. They gave me that information for my DSC HX100V when I asked. No need paying up for a faster card than your camera can use.
